Turf Talk: Getting to the Point

When it comes down it, junior Ashley Kunihiro has a day short of typical. a major in kinesiology, Kunihiro goes to class and does homework, which seems pretty routine. But the kicker to it all is when she puts on that mesh helmet and holds her sparring pose. On-guard! Her typical day is out the window.

Kunihiro is the president secretary for ASU?s fencing club. Fencing, an official Olympic sport, is a combat sport that somewhat mimics those crazy sword battles in the old movies. Two swordsmen face off with the objective to land hits on the other opponent. The first person to land the tip of their sabre gets a point.

The club abides by Olympic regulations. In tournaments and matches, the same rules are applied. this past year, the team had shown itself as a dominant force. In the Southern California Conference, eight individuals medaled and the team as a whole medaled a total of four times including two first place awards. from there, they breezed through the windy city of Chicago, where the Collegiate Nationals were held. The highlights of the nationals were the team?s two first place team trophies.

?Fencing is known as the physical chess game. being able to think ahead and being able to execute is difficult,? says Kunihiro, who has been fencing for five years and running.

Arizona State?s fencing club has a broad range of experience levels to choose from. there is the competitive side of the sport but also a recreation side for those not yet ready for competition. with the dawn of a new year, there are roughly forty new swordsmen. most of them are freshmen.

?I love the energy because people are excited about this weird, unusual sport. It?s like if you love Jack Sparrow, you love pirates. if you love the sport of fencing, you?d love doing it,? Kunihiro says.

As Kunihiro thrusts her sabre forward to land a crucial hit, for now at least, all books are out the window. for now, the world of fencing has eaten her homework. The club is an escape into a sporting realm not so typical like baseball or basketball, but even so, when that thrust lands that crucial hit, it brings to the table a different hype. not only is the loud ring an indicator of success, it an indicator of getting better.

?We want to open the community?s eyes,? Kunihiro says. ?It?s something you really have to experience.?
