Fencing Sweeps Ivy League Championships - GoPrincetonTigers ...

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Reprising the program's sweep from 2010, the Princeton fencing teams tore through the Ivy League championship over the weekend to a pair of undefeated finishes and two Ivy championships.

Both programs defeated Yale, Columbia and Brown Sunday to follow up on wins Saturday against Harvard and Penn along with a women's win against Cornell.

The women's team's title is its sixth overall and third straight, adding to wins in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2010 and 2011. The men's title is the program's 14th, the first 12 of which came in 2001 and earlier before the Tigers added one two years ago.

On the women's side, the match against Columbia turned out to be the Ivy League championship bout, as both teams entered Sunday at 3-0 and the Lions finished with no other losses. The Tiger women made sure there was little drama, defeating Columbia 18-9. Behind Princeton at 6-0 and Columbia at 5-1, Harvard finished at 4-2, Penn at 3-3, Yale at 2-4, Brown at 1-5 and Cornell at 0-6.

The men's match against the Lions went down to the final bout, one of two to end at 14-13 on the weekend. The first on Saturday handed Harvard, the defending champion, its first and as it turned only loss of the weekend. The second wasn't decided until Jonathan Yergler won the last dual to be contested, giving the Tigers the clinching 14th victory.

Both Princeton teams closed out the weekend and the outright titles with decisive wins over Brown. With that victory, Princeton's women have won 19 straight matches at the Ivy League round-robin dating back to 2009.

The Ivy League titles are the fourth and fifth of the 2011-12 academic year for Princeton, joining men's cross country, field hockey and men's squash.

Columbia saberist William Spear won the men's Most Oustanding Performer award with a 13-2 record, and honor that Alexander Mills won last year for Princeton. This year among foilists, Mills had the best winning percentage and tied for the most victories at 11-3, while Edward Kelley was the winningest epee fencer at 12-2.

Ambika Singh was named the Most Outstanding Performer on the women's side, Princeton's first honor after the award was instituted last year. Singh finished 17-1 on the weekend, the most wins of any competitor, and other Tigers finished close to that total as well. Eliza Stone was 16-2 to lead all saberists, while Katharine Holmes at 16-2 and Hannah Safford at 15-3 were tops among epeeists.

The fencing teams will have next weekend away from competition before heading to Temple for a day of dual meets on Feb. 25.
