WASHINGTON (AP) ? New day, old bickering between President Barack Obama and congressional Republicans.
Obama used his Saturday radio and Internet address to finger GOP lawmakers for a stalemate that could increase taxes on Americans next year. A leading Republican senator cast the president and his Democratic Party as obstructionists who want to place the tax burden on businesses during an economic slowdown.
Obama pressed the Republican-controlled House to extend Bush-era tax cuts for households making $250,000 or less while letting lower rates on wealthier taxpayers expire and go up. The Democratic-controlled Senate narrowly passed such a measure this past week; the House is not expected to follow suit.
"Instead of doing what's right for middle-class families and small-business owners, Republicans in Congress are holding these tax cuts hostage until we extend tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans," Obama said.
Responding on behalf of the congressional GOP, Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch, the top Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, said Obama's plan would do more harm to the economy and criticized him with almost identical language. He called for extending current tax rates for all taxpayers and spending 2013 overhauling and simplifying the tax code.
"Raising taxes as our economy continues to struggle is not a solution, and the majority of Americans and businesses understand that," Hatch said. "The president and his Washington allies need to stop holding America's economy hostage in order to raise taxes on those trying to lead our economic recovery."
The competing views frame today's Washington political debate and the presidential contest. With the economy standing as the main issue on voters' minds, Obama, rival Mitt Romney and lawmakers of both parties are engaged in brinkmanship and political test votes ahead of the November election and the Dec. 31 deadline when the Bush-era tax rates expire.
Obama used his address to take a rare swipe at Romney, even though he didn't mention his challenger by name.
"Republicans in Congress and their nominee for president believe that the best way to create prosperity in America is to let it trickle down from the top," he said. "They believe that if our country spends trillions more on tax cuts for the wealthy, we'll somehow create jobs ? even if we have to pay for it by gutting things like education and training and by raising middle-class taxes. They're wrong."
Saturday's dueling addresses come a day after the government reported that weak consumer spending held growth to an annual rate of just 1.5 percent in the second quarter. That was lower than the 2 percent rate of the first quarter and less than what's necessary to help drive down the unemployment rate, now stuck at 8.2 percent.
The White House budget office on Friday also predicted that the economy for this year will grow at a modest 2.6 percent annual rate and that the jobless rate will average 8 percent. It forecasts 2.6 percent growth next year, down from the 3.0 percent it predicted in February.

NEW YORK (AP) ? It was the buy signal that markets were waiting for.
When European Central Bank president Mario Draghi vowed to "do whatever it takes" to keep the continent's monetary union intact, stocks were off to races in the U.S. and Europe.
The Dow Jones industrial average on Thursday jumped 212 points, or 1.7 percent, to 12,888 following big gains in European markets. Benchmark stock indexes in Spain and Italy surged 6 percent and 4 percent in France.
Draghi's comments at an investor conference at the Olympics raised hopes that Europe's central bank might intervene to bring down the cripplingly high borrowing costs for struggling European countries like Spain and Italy.
After insisting for months that it was up to European governments to restore confidence in the currency shared by 17 nations there, Draghi pledged that "the ECB is ready to do whatever it takes to preserve the euro."
That commitment gave a big boost to global markets. "The No. 1 problem in the world now is Europe's finances," John Fox, director of research at Fenimore Asset Management, said. "When the head of the ECB comes out and says he's willing to do anything, that's code for 'We are going to agree to resolve this issue.' "
In other signs that investors were becoming more confident that Europe's financial crisis would not spin out of control, borrowing costs for Spain and Italy fell sharply, the euro surged a penny to $1.23 against the dollar and the yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 1.43 percent from 1.40 percent late Wednesday. Investors tend to sell low-risk assets like Treasurys when they're less fearful about global markets and the economy.
As earnings reports this week from Caterpillar and Ford have shown, Europe's troubles can have a big impact on the results of major U.S. corporations.
"Close to 20 percent of the S&P 500 companies' revenues comes from Europe," said Lawrence Creatura, portfolio manager at Federated Investors. "We're in a global, interconnected economy and Europe's troubles are our own today."
The broader the Standard & Poor's 500 index rose for the first time in five days. It was up 22.13 points, or 1.7 percent, to 1,360.02 The gains in the U.S. stock market were broad. All 10 of the industry groups in the S&P 500 index rose, led by telecommunications companies.
In other trading, and the Nasdaq composite index rose 39.01 points, or 1.4 percent, to 2,893.25, despite more disappointing news from technology companies including the online game maker Zynga.
Several U.S. companies were also rising sharply after reporting stronger earnings. Sprint Nextel jumped 68 cents, or 20 percent, to $4.05. The country's third-largest wireless carrier was successful in convincing smartphone subscribers to pay up for "unlimited data" service, and its service revenue zoomed higher, beating analysts' estimates.
In Europe, Draghi's comments came after days of uncertainty in Europe and rising concern over Spain's recession and the country's banks, which are reeling following the implosion of a real estate bubble. As borrowing costs for both Spain and Italy rose in the past week, investors feared that both countries might need to be rescued, like Greece, Portugal and Ireland had been in the last two years.
Borrowing costs for Spain's government plunged following Draghi's comments as investors anticipated that the European Central Bank might step up its purchases of Spanish government bonds.
The yield on Spain's benchmark 10-year bond dropped almost half a percentage point, a huge move, to 6.89 percent. That rate surged as high as 7.54 percent this week as investors dumped the country's bonds and lost confidence in Spain's ability to manage its debts.
Technology companies continued to report disappointing earnings following industry leader Apple's rare earnings disappointment earlier this week.
Zynga, which produces popular social network games "CityVille" and "FarmVille" posted poor quarterly results and cut its outlook, prompting a number of analyst downgrades. Its stock fell $1.90, or 37.5 percent, to $3.17.
Zynga's disastrous results were also a bad omen for Facebook, which got about 12 percent of its 2011 revenue from Zynga. Facebook plunged 10 percent in after-hours trading after the company reported a loss of $157 million for its second quarter. The stock was down $2.63 at $24.19.
Among other stocks making big moves:
? PulteGroup jumped $1.84, or 18 percent, to $11.86 after the homebuilder posted a quarterly profit, beating Wall Street's forecasts thanks to higher house prices and sales.
? United Continental slumped $1.21, or 6 percent, $19.20 after the combined airline's second-quarter net income dropped 37 percent as it continued to wrestle with merger-related issues.
? Whole Foods Market jumped $9.57, or 11 percent, to $94.10 after the natural and organic foods store chain lifted its profit outlook for the year. Its net income jumped 32 percent in the latest quarter as shoppers spent more.

Kentucky Health News: Reports show impact of health-care industry ...
It's not often that such detailed data is broken down to the county level, but a new report looks at the economic impact of the local health-care system in each of Kentucky's 120 counties.
The reports, compiled at the University of Kentucky, look at the number of health-care jobs, as well as the revenue and income generated by the local health-care system. In many rural counties, the authors note, health care is the second largest industry, second only to local government.
The most important economic role of the health-care sector is to "keep local health-care dollars at home," the report says. If private insurance, consumer out-of-pocket payments and Medicare and Medicaid transfer payments aren't kept local, an outmigration of health-care services can take place. "This bypass of local health care remains an important issue for many rural health care providers and rural communities."
Conversely, if the local health-care sector can attract patients from outside the area, health care "can act as an export industry," the authors note.?Because doctors and other providers can help improve the health and productivity of the local workforce, the health-care sector can also help an area recruit new and retain existing business.
The county reports include a comparison of household income with the state and nation, and indicates how that income is earned. In Boyle County, for example, 55.6 percent was earned through place-of-work earnings, while 22.6 percent was from transfer payments, such as those from Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.?The reports also break down how much income is generated according to industry type, from 2000 to 2008.
Income earned by Boyle County residents working in the health-care sector increased 42 percent in those years, one of the largest areas of gains in the county. In all, health care accounted for 13 percent of industry in Boyle and generated?more than $322 million in sales, more than $151 million in labor income and nearly 3,500 jobs in the area.
The report, available here, was compiled by Dr. Alison Davis, director of the Community and Ecomomic Development Initiative in Kentucky, part of UK's College of Agriculture. It was funded by the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky.

Police, Gun Control Advocates Push Washington for Action
Police and gun control advocates today sounded a louder call for politicians to take a stand against gun violence - despite Congress's lack of political will to touch the issue, or the White House's affirmation that President Obama had no plans to put new gun laws on the books.
"We have refused to accept silence from the candidates for the highest office in our land," Dan Gross, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, told reporters today at the National Press Club.
"The American people have shown overwhelmingly that they are ready to have a real conversation about how to prevent gun violence, and we are demanding the same from our elected representatives: Not to play politics but to lead."
The nation's largest anti-gun violence group, the Brady Campaign, was founded by President Reagan's press secretary, Jim Brady, who was confined to a wheelchair after he took a bullet to the head in a Reagan assassination attempt in 1981.
The group supports broadening the Brady Law, enacted in 1994, which requires federally licensed firearms dealers to run background checks on would-be buyers to weed out felons, drug addicts or others who might prove dangerous. But today, the group put policy on hold and instead urged Obama and presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney to take the lead in discussing ways to end gun violence, whatever they might be.

"It is time for all of us to come together - Republicans, Democrats, blue states, red states, people who own guns and people who don't - to have a meaningful national conversation about what we can do about it," Gross said. "I think it's shameful that our political leaders would play politics when there are lives that can be saved."
More than 30 people die of gun-related violence every day in the U.S., according to the Brady Campaign. If that number holds steady, 48,000 Americans will be victims of gun violence during the next presidential term.
"We truly believe, as a nation, we are better than this," Gross said.
Less than a week after a movie theater massacre in Aurora, Colo., left 12 dead and 58 injured, a national group of police associations also took to Washington, D.C., to drum up support for more gun control measures.
The National Law Enforcement Partnership to Prevent Gun Violence, a group of nine national police associations, today echoed its demands for background checks on all firearms purchasers.
"America, we are not doing enough to keep guns out of the wrong hands," said James Johnson, Baltimore county chief of police and incoming chairman of the partnership. "We are long past the point of saying 'enough is enough.' The mantra has grown old. It's time to take action to keep firearms from dangerous people."
The Brady Law applies only to federally licensed gun dealers - which accounts for 60 percent of all U.S. firearm transactions, according to the partnership. People who buy assault-style guns or high-capacity ammunition online, or through a classified ad, for example, might not be subject to those background checks.
Aurora shooting suspect James Holmes did pass background checks to purchase his guns legally, partnership president Hubert Williams acknowledged. But broadening the law would help close a "gaping hole" that illegal buyers can still exploit, he said.
"We're not asking for new laws. We're asking for existing laws to be enforced on all people that are purchasing these weapons," Williams said. "We're just saying that the law has a loophole in it that needs to be plugged."
Gross, of the Brady Campaign, said it's important for politicians to talk about gun control - but just paying lip service isn't enough.
"A speech is not a plan. An endorsement of a measure is not a solution," he said. "We want a plan with solutions."

Sprint posts massive $1.37 billion loss for Q2; sells ... - Know Your Cell
Sprint Nextel on Thursday posted a net loss loss of $1.37 billion in the second quarter of 2012. The nation's third largest wireless operator blamed the big loss on the cost of shutting down Nextel, network upgrades and huge iPhone subsidies paid to Apple.
Sprint actually saw growth with $7.3 billion in sales, compared to a $847 million loss in the same quarter of 2011. Overall, revenues were up about 4 percent over last year, which isn't really anything to brag about.
Unfortunately for Sprint, the bad news didn't stop there, as the company lost 668,000 Nextel customers in the quarter. Apparently only 60 percent of all Nextel customers signed new, two-year agreements. The others, it appears, simply decided to leave for other carriers.
While extremely worrying, Sprint's losses were expected. The company has been facing some big competition from AT&T and Verizon. T-Mobile USA and other regional carriers also introduced lower rate plans this quarter, which I'm sure also had an effect on Sprint's business.
Despite all the negatives, there were a few rays of light for Sprint with today's report. The carrier added nearly 442,000 post-paid subscribers and sold 1.5 million iPhones. Postpaid churn also dropped to just 1.69 percent, and the company adjusted its OIBDA forecast for the year from $4.5 billion to $4.6 billion
Sprint is currently trying to get back on track this year with LTE, the iPhone and other high-end Android devices, so it will be interesting to see how the year plays out. There are definitely some positives here so we'll just have to see what happens. Sprint certainly has an uphill battle to fight in 2012 and 2013.

Untreated Heartburn May Raise Risk for Esophageal Cancer, Study Says
WEDNESDAY, July 25 (HealthDay News) -- Rates of esophageal cancer have surged due to a lack of awareness about what causes the disease and how it can be prevented, experts say.
The esophagus is the muscular tube that carries food and liquid from the mouth to the stomach. There were six times as many cases of esophageal cancer in 2001 as there were in 1975, according to a team from the University of California, Los Angeles. The researchers noted that one key way people can reduce their risk for the disease is by managing heartburn and acid reflux, often called gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD.
"Obesity and poor diet have spiked the numbers suffering from acid reflux," Dr. V. Raman Muthusamy, associate clinical professor of medicine and endoscopy director at the UCLA Center for Esophageal Disorders, said in a university news release.
If left untreated, GERD can cause stomach acid to wash repeatedly into the esophagus, causing changes in the tissue lining. This condition is called Barrett's esophagus, and people diagnosed with Barrett's may be up to 40 times more likely to develop esophageal cancer, the UCLA experts explained.
Complicating matters, people with esophageal cancer may not experience any symptoms other than heartburn, which could prevent early detection of the disease, said Muthusamy and his colleague Dr. Kevin Ghassemi, clinical programs director at the UCLA Center for Esophageal Disorders.
"Early identification, treatment and management of changes in the esophageal lining are critical to catching problems early," Ghassemi said in the news release.
To help people know when to be concerned about acid reflux or heartburn and reduce the risks associated with the condition, Muthusamy and Ghassemi offered the following tips:
- Anyone experiencing heartburn more than once a week should visit their doctor to manage the condition.
- Lose extra pounds. Being overweight can make acid reflux and heartburn worse.
- Avoid eating too much at one time, and keep upright after eating. Reclining with a full stomach can make symptoms worse.
- Engage in light physical activity after eating; exercise can help digestion.

J.P.Morgan Securities and Citi Investment Research downgraded the stock to "neutral" from their top ratings and at least five other brokerages slashed their price targets on the stock to as low as $3.00.
"The biggest factor impacting current performance appears to be the way Facebook is surfacing gaming content on its platform," JP Morgan's Doug Anmuth wrote in a note to clients.
"Given what we believe could be multi-quarter impact from Facebook and lack of near-term operational catalysts, we're downgrading Zynga shares," Anmuth added.
Surfacing refers to how a website showcases content.
Zynga relies on the Facebook for more than 90 percent of its revenue, but a steep drop in players for its core Facebook money-making games prompted the company to slash its 2012 earnings estimates.
Zynga expects 2012 earnings to be between 4 cents and 9 cents a share, down from its prior view of 23 cents to 29 cents a share.
"As Zynga looks to grow its footprint in the mobile category, the traditional Facebook business was expected to act as a solid foundation, but is instead showing incremental weakness," said Piper Jaffray analysts.
FarmVille, which represented 29 percent of Zynga's second-quarter revenues, has shrunk to just 20 million users this month from a high of about 80 million in March, according to Appdata.com, a Facebook tracking service.
Barclays Capital axed its price target on the stock to $3 from $8, while Piper Jaffray and Citi now have a target of $4.
BMO Capital Markets halved its target on the stock to $5, while Robert W. Baird and Canaccord Genuity lowered their price target to $6 from $13.
Zynga shares, which have dropped 60 percent since their market debut in February, closed at $3.20 on Wednesday on the Nasdaq.

If you?re anything like me, you would?ve held onto that message and replayed it until you accidentally erased it. Later that night, you had a reason to put on your control-top pantyhose, get dressed and curl your hair. Late-night conversations involved?whispers?not Wi-Fi. Dating was a whole lot sexier! And while communication was less convenient back then, conversations felt warm, talking had deeper meaning and a kiss goodnight was not a set of lips sent via text.

Library Monday: Project Based Homeschooling. - Bird and Little Bird

That being said, I am so inspired by Lori Pickert's book, Project-Based Homeschooling: Mentoring Self-Directed Learners that I really wanted to share it with you sooner rather than later. Like from the very moment that I picked it up and started to read.
Now, I'm not a homeschooler, I just sometimes play one on the internet.? As regular readers probably already know, my daughter goes to a tiny private school with an emphasis on integrating the outdoor environment into a fairly rigorous classical education.? No computers, lots of hiking.? But the fact that Mariam is in school has never prevented me from taking an active approach to her education at home.? We read, we do projects, Dan is even doing a homeschool Latin course with her.? And, depending on our situation come residency time, there is a strong possibility that I will find myself a more official homeschooler in the future.? In the meantime, I dabble.? As, I think, all parents do.? So, I do occasionally read up on homeschooling issues, techniques and ideas and honestly, I don't generally come across anything that rocks my socks.? It's not (no offense to anyone intended) the most innovative stuff overall.
Which is why I find Lori's book to be such a revelation.? It is simple in its approach, and many of the ideas are of the sort that are so sensible and reasonable you might well think that you should have thought of them on your own.? But still, going forward I plan to take a very different approach to helping Mariam to identify the projects that she wants to tackle and to letting her undertake them.? I had to laugh as I read aloud to her the section of Lori's book about children becoming suspicious of adults investigating their current interests looking for areas of study or project ideas.? Lori mentioned that many children worry that adults will ask what they really want to learn about and then ruin their favorite subjects by making that learning an adult-driven (and probably mess-free) process.? Mariam nodded her head solemnly as I read that paragraph to her.? Oy.
As I said, I'm only part way through Lori's book.? But I am already more then willing to push it across the virtual coffee table at all of you.? Get a copy and read it.? The chapters that I've read so far have made me realize any number of important things, but perhaps the most salient among them is this: this isn't just a homeschooling book.? In past experiences, most men are fine with my rules, because nowadays, a lot of men aren?t trying to meet someone?s child immediately.? Also, most importantly, your child should know they?re not being replaced. There should be dialogue between a parent and children to reassure them they still are the priority in your life, and just because someone has been added to the equation doesn?t mean that?s going to change.
When the time came to introduce my son to someone I?d developed a relationship with, I tried to plan an outing everyone could enjoy. The first time my son met my friend (I refer to him as HWSRN ? he who shall remain nameless), it was after a few months of dating him, and we simply had lunch at the mall. At the time my son was about 4-? years old, so the conversation centered around cartoons and video games.?Over the next few months there were other outings that involved my son, and till this day, although we?re not in a relationship anymore, HWSRN is still a big part of my life and he interacts with my son occasionally.
In my son?s 13 years, he?s only met two of the men with whom I was in a serious relationship.?As he?s grows older, I wonder if I?ll have a hard time breaking out of these rules I?ve set for myself. As the saying goes, it?s hard to teach an old dog new tricks.

People who knew James Eagan Holmes when he was growing up in San Diego were shocked by the news of the deadly movie theater attack.

?I am not a 24-year-old gun-slinging killer from Aurora,? James P. Holmes wrote on Facebook on Friday morning.
Holmes is a Denver man who shares first and last names with James Eagan Holmes, the suspect in the deadly shooting that took place at a midnight screening of the latest Batman movie just hours before.
As the investigation got under way in the shooting at the ?The Dark Knight Rises? premiere, in which 70 members of the estimated 300-seat crowd were killed or injured, those looking for clues to make sense of it all went online for a digital footprint of the suspect ? to no avail.
It appears that the suspect Holmes is not on any social networks ? at least not under his legal name. Yet the picture of Holmes that has been painted is not much different than that of a typical, perhaps disenchanted, college student.
This is what we know about James Eagan Holmes: He graduated with a bachelor?s degree in neuroscience from the University of California, Riverside, and was about to drop out of graduate school at the University of Colorado, Denver. The reasons why Holmes would get dressed in all black, a ballistic helmet, and tactical gloves and walk into that AMC Theater early Friday morning and open fire on innocent people remain a mystery.
If he was on Facebook, we might know what?s been on his mind, what he had for dinner, or how he spent the Fourth of July, offering insight into his mental state ahead of the events, but Holmes is not found on that social network, or on Twitter. He doesn?t have a Web site or a blog. Unconfirmed reports late Friday allege that he may have been on the dating site AdultFriendFinder.com, not a forum most would choose to connect with friends, family, or the greater public.
The fact that Holmes is not online perplexed denizens of the Internet throughout the day, invoking some to message people with similar names, create fake Facebook profiles, and even write articles pondering why Holmes presented no presence online.
Mashable Editor in Chief Lance Ulanoff can?t ?get over what an online ghost Holmes appears to be.? Slate staff writer Will Oremus posits that either Holmes really doesn?t have a digital footprint, or his name is so common that search results have been buried beneath Friday?s news.
?It?s certainly unusual. Data suggests that 95 to 98 percent of people Holmes? age are on social media,? Dr. Megan A. Moreno, of the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health, told CBS News. As for that other 5 percent to 2 percent, Moreno, who has no connection to the case, highlighted a link between extreme Internet use ? or lack of use ? and depression.
A study titled ?A U-shaped association between intensity of Internet use and adolescent health,? published by the journal Pediatrics, attempted to draw a correlation between mental health and intensity of Internet use. The theory being that poor mental health may result in either heavy use of the Internet or little to none.
But the lack of a Facebook account doesn?t necessarily mean the suspect was depressed. If he was pursuing a graduate degree in neuroscience, he may have limited his presence on social networks for professional reasons. After all, even with privacy settings in place, your information is still online.
There is the possibility that Holmes either used a pseudonym for his online accounts or his accounts were put on hold, making them unavailable during an online search. A former student colleague told The New York Times that the suspect spent time in the lab logged in to online role-playing games.
A truth is that with tragedies comes the human need to ask ?why? ? even when grasping at straws. The fact that James P. Holmes had to publicly announce on Facebook that he was not the shooting suspect, and that a screenshot of his status update was seen thousands of times, is telling of how many have tried to connect for information.
A day and a half since the shooting, the mystery of ?James Holmes? continues. People are ?so angry they can?t get to that person,? Moreno said. ?They?re trying to get at anything ? trying to vent.?

Boone, NC ? We are seeking a committed individual to be a vital part of the development team of Donor Ministries (DM) to minister to the information and involvement desires of high-capacity donors. The manager will proactively lead in developing, implementing, and evaluating personalized communication strategies through which relationships with major donors are won, kept strong, and lifted to mutually beneficial partnership. This includes continual monitoring, thoughtful analysis, and accurate reporting of major donors interaction with the ministry. Critical to success will be close working relationships within DM and interdepartmentally, using communications tools and methods to reinforce the organizations messages, and generating additional funding for Samaritans Purse (SP) ministries worldwide.
The Manager also will have primary responsibility for a specific portfolio of major donors as assigned. This will involve using creative, efficient, personalized communication methods in a strategy that engages donors with opportunities for significant and meaningful partnership.
The position reports to the Director of Development for SP Programs, located in Boone, NC.
Required: A personal devotion to Jesus Christ and a passion for global evangelism and discipleship. Marketing/communications background with at least 3 years experience. Bachelor?s degree; at least 12 credit hours of college level biblical studies preferred. Experience with a wide variety of fundraising concepts.
