MOUNT PLEASANT, S. C. (WCIV)- Spend just one minute with Joe Wise and you'll get a good sense that his involvement with the American Cancer Society is more of a calling than anything else.
Wise is suffering from stage four kidney cancer and it's incurable. Doctors told him that he would not live past 2010. Today's date: June 8, 2012 and he's still here- riding for a cause that he holds dear.
His eight-day team ride across America begins today, leaving from the USS Yorktown. The motorcycle caravan will make stops in NC, TN, AR, TX, NM and AZ before ending in San Diego.
Along the way, many will get to hear Wise's inspiring story and see the American Cancer Society's impact at work.
"The American Cancer Society, aside from the federal government does more to raise money for cancer research than anybody on the planet," says Paige Crone, the organization's director of community development.
It's?because?of?the research and treatments that Wise has seen and experienced that led him to ride across country.
Wise, a Christian, believes that while his prognosis may not be the brightest, he has a higher calling. It's his faith that keeps him going so that he may be able to help cancer sufferers and their family members make it through the dark days.
