It may pain Ford to admit, but one of the biggest rivals to the 2013 Ford Taurus is its little brother, the 2013 Ford Fusion. While we have plenty of nice things to say about the Fusion, the price overlap between it and the Taurus often leaves us wondering how many Taurus buyers might be swayed into getting the smaller, newer car. With our newly published 2013 Ford Taurus SEL First Test, we decided to take a look at how the 2013 Taurus and 2013 Fusion compare by the numbers.
Performance
The Taurus Limited can be had with a 3.5-liter V-6 that makes 288 hp and 254 lb-ft of torque. Paired with a six-speed automatic, the Taurus Limited is available with all-wheel drive, like the model we tested earlier this year. That combo is good for a 7.2-second 0-60 mph time, and a 15.1 second quarter mile time. So how does that stack up with the range-topping Fusion Titanium? Well, the Fusion we tested had a smaller engine (a 2.0-liter turbo-four), 48-hp less, more torque, a six-speed auto, and all-wheel drive. Given that it?s much lighter than the Taurus, the Fusion has a solid edge in just about every measurable performance metric. The newly tested front-drive Taurus V-6 sprinted from 0-60 mph in 6.6 seconds and on through the quarter mile in 15.1 seconds at 95.0 mph. The Fusion Titanium is shown below in red; the Fusion SE is pictured in blue at right.
? | Powertrain | 0-60 mph | Quarter | 60-0 mph | Skidpad | Figure 8 | EPA Fuel Economy |
2013 Ford Fusion Titanium AWD | 2.0L/240-hp/270-lb-ft turbo I-4, 6A, AWD | 6.8 sec | 15.1 sec @ 91.6 mph | 117 ft | 0.84 g (avg) | 27.2 sec @ 0.64 g (avg) | 22/31/25 mpg |
2013 Ford Taurus Limited AWD | 3.5L/288-hp/254-lb-ft V-6, 6A, AWD | 7.2 sec | 15.5 sec @ 92.3 mph | 120 ft | 0.84 g (avg) | 27.7 sec @ 0.63 g (avg) | 18/26/21 mpg |
Comfort
So the Fusion has the edge on performance, fine, but surely the larger Taurus will be much more comfortable inside. Compare the Taurus we tested with the a Fusion and we?re not so sure that?s the case. The shorter and narrower Fusion has 0.2 inches more headroom and 2.4 inches more legroom up front, while matching the Taurus? rear headroom, and beating it by 0.2 inches in rear legroom. The Taurus does have the edge on the Fusion in trunk space: 20.1 cubic feet versus the Fusion?s 16.0 cubic feet. The two cars are nearly identical when it comes to front and rear shoulder room, while the Taurus has 1.3 inches more hip room in the front and 1.4 inches more in the back.
Curb Weight* | Wheelbase | L x W x H | Headroom (front) | Legroom (f) | Headroom (rear) | Legroom (r) | Trunk | |
2013 Fusion SE | 3526 lb | 112.2 in | 191.7 x 72.9 x 58.1 in | 39.2 in | 44.3 in | 37.8 in | 38.3 in | 16.0 cu ft |
2013 Taurus SEL | 3969 lb | 112.2 | 202.9 x 76.2 x 60.7 in | 39.0 in | 41.9 in | 37.8 in | 38.1 in | 20.1 cu ft |
*Curb weights are Ford-estimated figures for the base-model Taurus V-6 and lowest-trim Fusion 2.0 EcoBoost, both with front-wheel drive.
So there you have it ? the newer Fusion beats the Taurus in most metrics except big-car presence, hip room, and trunk space. Which Ford sedan would you rather have? Do you think the two cars appeal to the same buyer? Sound off below, and make sure to check out our First Test on the 2013 Taurus SEL right here.
