SAN DIEGO ?With The Road to WrestleMania clearly underway in the aftermath of Royal Rumble, WWE Main Event kicked off with a special edition of ?Miz TV? featuring Ryback. Also, Tensai battled Titus O?Neil in an epic clash of two powerful Superstars.

Ryback is The Awesome One?s guest on ?Miz TV? (PHOTOS | WATCH)

Before welcoming Ryback to ?Miz TV,? The Awesome One acknowledged the risk he was taking by having the hungry Superstar on his talk show ? the last time Ryback was on ?Miz TV,? he completely destroyed the set. The massive competitor joined the ?Most Must-See WWE Talk Show? in history, however, to discuss United States Champion Antonio Cesaro, who walked away from his match with Ryback last week on WWE Main Event. Following a powerful Meathook clothesline, The Swiss Superman allowed himself to be counted out ? although the U.S. Champion could not escape Ryback?s wrath for long as both Superstars were set to compete in a rematch following ?Miz TV.?

Just as The Miz and Ryback touched on their mutual animosity toward Cesaro, the Swiss-born Superstar made his way to the ring, screaming at his rivals about how they are ?typical Americans? and conspiring against him. The U.S. Champion?s tirade only enraged Ryback, who followed Cesaro to the squared circle, hungry for a battle.

Google, Facebook led private tech M&A activity in 2012 as companies spent $46.8b on over 2,200 deals

Publicly disclosed merger and acquisition activity for private tech companies reached $46.8 billion last year across 2,277 transactions, according to a new report from CB Insights.

The $46.8 billion figure comes from just 331 deals where the valuations were disclosed, as only 15% of transactions made the financial terms public.

Google and Facebook were the most active acquirers with 12 private acquisitions each. Five of Facebook?s deals were talent acquisitions, or ?acqui-hires?.

manda cbi 730x543 Google, Facebook led private tech M&A activity in 2012 as companies spent $46.8b on over 2,200 deals

Interestingly, the bulk of acquired companies had not raised investment. 76% of private tech companies that were bought up last year had bootstrapped instead of turning to VCs.

As expected, California saw the most private tech M&A deals last year, more than the next five states combined. North Dakota was the only US state that didn?t host a private tech acquisition in 2012.?Internationally, the UK was the top acquirer, followed by Canada. India emerged as an up-and-comer at the third top international market.

Web and mobile commerce were the most popular types of companies to acquire, comprising 173 of overall deals.

Notable acquistions in 2012 included: Facebook purchasing of Instagram, Microsoft snatching up Yammer,?and Twitter acquiring Posterous.

An earlier report on the venture capital market found that?$28.3 billion in investments?had been made last year, down from $30.6 billion in 2011.

Google Science Fair 2013 kicks off, uses Hangouts to help inventive teens (video)

Image

The Google Science Fair began in 2011 as a way to spur a love of science among teens and, just possibly, spark a few breakthroughs for science as a whole. It's back for a third year, and there's big improvements to both the competition's technology and rewards. The 2013 Fair will have Google+ Hangouts on Air for help and motivation, as well as to introduce us to the 15 finalists during the vote for a public-chosen award in August. The early talks will include Segway pioneer Dean Kamen and sea explorer Fabien Cousteau, among others. Finalists once again get prizes from Google itself, Lego, National Geographic and Scientific American, but there's extra bonuses this year for the grand prize winner: along with the $50,000 scholarship, Galapagos Islands trip and other individual gifts, the winner's school will get both $10,000 and a Hangout session with CERN. Young inventors have until the end of April 30th to submit their projects, and we'll learn about the very cream of the crop on September 23rd.

Volkswagen Defends Its Super Bowl Ad - Business Insider

volkwagen super bowl 2013 adVolkswagen released a statement responding to allegations that its Super Bowl ad, in which a white guy from Minnesota adopts a Jamaican accent and irie attitude after getting a Beetle, is racist.

But some are calling the superimposed accent offensive.?New York Times columnist Charles Blow likened the fake accent to "blackface with voices" on Soledad O'Brien's "Starting Point."

The Wall Street Journal's Christopher John Farley postulated if this is "the Jar Jar Binks of 2013."

VW, however, defends the spot without completely addressing the race issue:

The concept of Volkswagen's "Get Happy" advertisement is to put a smile on your face, and continues to build upon the heritage of "human stories, told simply." The protagonist in the commercial is intentionally meant to portray an upbeat perspective and intelligence as he influences his coworkers to "Get Happy." His accent is intended to convey a relaxed, cheerful demeanor while encouraging a positive attitude as the antidote to a tough Monday. ?Everyone can relate to being in an office and being ground down by the pressures of work and "Get Happy" brings an optimistic, bright spirit into an otherwise mundane day.

Monday, VW America marketing officer noted that "We actually talked to about 100 Jamaicans in the research, and we had a speech coach on site to make sure it was authentic as possible."

Arts and Entertainment: Qualities Of Excellent Contemporary Fiction ...

Someone's free time can be spent with different activities. One of the things that you can do is to read a book as a hobby. You can choose from different genres to read like romance, sci-fi books, or even contemporary fiction novels.

If you like the fictitious stories that are written with a setting of the present time, then the first genre is suitable for you. These usually deals with experiences that are usually felt in real life. Although the people and the plot are the works of the writer's imagination, it can still reflect the kinds of struggles and challenges that many people experience.

Each year, a lot of American fiction books are published for the benefit of the readers. However, this can lead to a challenge since readers might have a hard time in distinguishing which ones to read first and worth their while. For you to learn more about it, you will have to do some research and gather the needed information.

The first thing that you need to examine is the plot. You must see to it that the story of the contemporary American fiction novel you are reading is riveting because of its closeness to reality. There should also be consistency in the characters and the words, actions, and other events that are written there should also be well-done.

Stories with a with a fast pace usually are more interesting for many. It is important for them not to be dragging and they should have twists and turns that can hook the interest of the readers. Many people look for materials to read that are so compelling that they do not want to put it down because they know something good is coming in the next pages.

Another thing that she has to know is if the events in the novel are riveting and are current. This enables the people who read it to relate with what it happening and reflect on their own struggles. Through this, the message of the story can be truly felt and the values are imparted to many.

To find out more about these stories, she can browse the internet for more information. She can read the summary and some samples over this medium. She can also use it to view the feedback and book reviews of critics and readers about it.

If you want to read these contemporary fiction novels, you can easily find them in the library. As for new releases, you can surely find it in leading bookstores in your area. If you want to make it convenient for you, you can search for it online and have it delivered to your home.

Baby?s on Us

Emily Yoffe, aka Dear Prudence, is on Washingtonpost.com weekly to chat live with readers. An edited?transcript of the chat is below. (Sign up here?to get Dear Prudence delivered to your inbox each week. Read Prudie?s?Slate columns?here. Send questions to Prudence at prudence@slate.com.)

Emily Yoffe: Good afternoon. I look forward to your questions.

Q. IVF Fundraising Party: I have a friend who is 26 and has been married for 23 months. She and her husband started trying to get pregnant right after they bought their house 20 months ago and did get pregnant but had an ectopic pregnancy and she lost the baby eight months ago. Now she has decided to take the step to do IVF because the stress of not getting pregnant is too much for her to stand. My issue is that she does not have the funds to pursue IVF, so she has fundraising parties. She sells home party items and all of the proceeds are going to her treatments. The first one she hosted herself and I went out of obligation. When you checked out and paid she gave you an item total then asked how much extra you would like to put directly toward her baby fund saying the standard was 20 percent of your item total. She then asked each person who would host a party for her fundraising efforts. When I informed her that I would not be hosting a party for her she got very upset and said I was not a good friend because I would not host and I only gave the minimum 20 percent additional to help her have a baby. Am I being selfish or is an IVF fundraising party as outrageous as it seems to me to be?

A: I wonder if at 26 she's explored all her medical alternatives to getting pregnant. But of course here we are speculating on your friend's medical decisions because she's made this profoundly personal question a matter of public obligation. I love her notion that the "standard" IVF tip for an item you didn't want in the first place is 20 percent. The woman's got chutzpah, I'll give her that. What she doesn't have, however, is the standing to insist that all her friends fund her fertility treatments. Wish her the best but continue to demur about hosting the Petri dish party. At the rate she's going, she should soon find herself fuming over all her selfish, former friends.

Dear Prudence: Desperate Single

Q. Not So Much a Cat Lover: I did not grow up with pets, am not a pet person, and am not used to all that comes with being a pet owner. Moving in with my boyfriend and his 6-year-old cat has been a slight adjustment. But I feel that I have been a good sport this past year of living together. I pet and play with the cat, brush her, give her treats, help feed her. I just really dislike the litter box and don't want to have the responsibility of cleaning it out. I ask my boyfriend to take care of this task. However, he gets a little huffy about my refusal to take turns cleaning out the litter box and often brings it up when we are doing household chores. I explain that I really dislike it, and this is his cat that he adopted four years before even meeting me, so it shouldn't be that much to ask that he continue to clean the litter box on his own. But still, I can tell that it bothers him and he feels the cat responsibilities should be split more evenly between the two of us. He does maintain sole financial responsibility for her. Any advice? Am I in the wrong?

A: He may want to offload her loads on you, but sorry, litter-box scooping is the responsibility of the original owner, especially if the new girlfriend is repelled by these duties. You can laugh and say you sure understand why he must be tired of the daily treasure hunt, but while you've come to enjoy Fifi, this is where you're drawing a line in the sand. Then ignore his huffing. And if his cat lives as long as my last one, he only has 15 more years of scooping ahead of him.

Q. Pedophile Co-worker: I am a team leader in a medium-sized arts organization. I recently discovered via Google that someone I work with closely, though only occasionally (several days a month), appears to have been convicted in the past several years for possessing an extensive quantity of truly disturbing child pornography. He pleaded guilty to a lesser charge and was placed on probation. He was hired at a time when the organization needed someone to fill his role (which is a part-time substitute position) very urgently, and I am not sure due diligence was done as it would have been in a more formal hiring process. In any case, his ability to do the job, which he does well, is not related to his criminal past. He has little to no contact with minors at work. However, as the parent of three young children, I am revolted by the idea of working closely with this man, who is pleasant and chatty. Adding to the complexity, while his fairly uncommon name, age, and locale match that of the person in the Google search, I am aware that I have no evidence this is the same man. What do I do? Acting coldly toward him is not only potentially unfair, but jeopardizes my team's ability to do our job well, and will raise questions among other team members. Treating him warmly (if he is the same person) repels me. Do I bring this up with my supervisor? HR? On what grounds? And if they are aware of his (possible) past and chose to hire him anyway, how do I manage my own behavior going forward?

A: I'm left wondering what you mean when you say he has "little to no" contact with minors at work. That indicates there is some contact, and your company needs to know if the terms of his probation, if he is still on it, covers being around minors. I also don't know if your organization's policies would prevent having someone on the payroll who was convicted of a felony. It's also true that you haven't been able to confirm your suspicions. All this is sufficient grounds to go to your supervisor and say you stumbled upon this information, it is not substantiated, but you felt the organization should at the least know what you discovered. If they were aware of his past, or if they look into it and conclude his occasional work should continue (taking into account this issue of minors in the workplace), you put aside your personal feelings and act professionally. It should help if you can accept that he was caught and the criminal justice system rendered its judgment.

Q. Bad Time for a Baby: My husband and I have known each other more than four years, and have been married for almost one year. We are going through a rough patch, and have sought the help of a marriage counselor in addition to his personal therapist for anger management issues. While the frequency of our fights has diminished, I don't think we're yet at a comfortable place in the marriage to think about having any children (I brought my 5-year-old daughter into the marriage, so I'm honestly in no hurry right now). My husband, on the other hand, is desperate for children in the immediate future, and thinks that our relationship issues have no impact, because he grew up in a household where fighting was the norm, and thinks that it wouldn't impact our children at all. How do I get through to him that children won't make anything better, and could in fact make things worse?

A: If your husband, who has back-to-back therapists, has concluded that since his parents were at each other's throats, and so are you two, and all that is hunky dory for childrearing, he needs a lot more therapy or maybe a new set of therapists. I know people can change and grow, but from what you're describing I can't understand why you married him. There's nothing you've written that give me any hope he has the slightest understanding of what it takes to raise a child in a healthy home?which has me concerned about his effect on your little girl. If you have a marriage counselor, yet you feel you have to write to me for advice on saying, "You're too emotionally out of control for me to consider having a child with you," then you need to take a hard look at your situation. It would also be a good idea to double up on the birth control.

FCC filing reveals Apple TV model A1469 with slightly smaller dimensions

Apple TV clears the FCC,

We don't generally find surprises from Apple in the daily stream of FCC documents and test reports, but a new filing published today seems to suggest that a new Apple TV model of some sort could be on the way. While the diagram pictured above doesn't suggest any major changes to the device's appearance, it does list some slightly smaller measurements: 93.78mm square compared to the 98mm of the current model. That's certainly not the biggest of differences, but the measurements in previous Apple FCC filings have been spot on. The model number, A1469, is also one that we haven't seen before, but the documents unfortunately don't offer much else in the way of details (only confirmation of the same WiFi capabilities as the current-gen Apple TV).

As MacRumors noted yesterday, a look at the download options for the latest Apple TV software update also revealed a new "AppleTV3,2" model, which it speculated could be an international version of the device -- although it of course remains to be seen if it and this model are one and the same. For now, you can get a closer look at the filing yourself at the source link.

Nestle, California Pizza Kitchen Are 'Poisoning' Consumers, Woman ...

California Pizza Kitchen and Nestle are killing us one frozen pizza at a time, according to one woman.

Katie Simpson is suing California Pizza Kitchen and Nestle in the California Southern District Court on grounds that the companies are ?deliberately poisoning their consumers" with frozen pizzas available in grocery stores, according to court documents. Partially hydrogenated vegetable oil in the companies' "trans fat pizzas" is a ?toxic carcinogen,? Simpson claims in her $5 million class-action lawsuit.

Nestle?s line of grocery store pizza brands includes California Pizza Kitchen, DiGiornos and Stouffer's. Simpson alleges that Nestle?s insistence on using trans fats in the brand's pizzas, despite available alternatives, makes it impossible for other, healthier supermarket pizza to compete. Partially hydrogenated vegetable oil is relatively low-cost, permitting Nestle to keep the lion?s share of the store-bought pizza marketplace, the plaintiffs allege in the lawsuit.

"Nestle recently received a copy of the lawsuit, and we are in the process of reviewing it," Edie Burge of Nestle's Corporate and Brand Affairs wrote in an email to The Huffington Post. "We will vigorously defend ourselves against all baseless allegations. All of our pizza products are in strict compliance with both FDA and USDA regulations."

California Pizza Kitchen did not return a comment to HuffPost by press time.

Trans fats can increase cholesterol levels and the risk of heart disease, ABC News reports. Saturated and trans fats have also been linked to Alzheimer's in at least one study. Simpson's lawsuit claims that the trans fat used in Nestle's pizzas causes cardiovascular disease, type-2 diabetes, breast prostate and colorectal cancer, as well as cognitive decline.

Although California has banned the use of trans fat in restaurants in 2008, Nestle can still use them in its pizzas that show up on supermarket shelves.

Denmark was the first country to pass bans regulating the sale of trans-fat food, followed by Switzerland, according to CBC News. New York City has also banned the use of trans fats in all restaurants within the city limits.

Other cities, like Cleveland, have attempted to institute a ban on the use of trans fats in prepared foods only to have it deemed unconstitutional, WKYC News reports.

California Pizza Kitchen and Nestle are not the first major food companies to be hit with lawsuits over trans fats. In 2005, McDonald?s paid $8.5 million to settle a lawsuit about trans fat used in its cooking oils, Fox News reports.

More recently, a class-action lawsuit claimed that Costco was misleading its customers with its Kirkland Signature Brand Potato Chips by stating that the product contains ?0 grams Trans Fat.? Although the chips are free of trans fat, they contain other unhealthy ingredients, including 13 grams of fat. An Illinois court also recently dismissed a lawsuit against Quaker Oats, which claimed that its use of the terms ?hearty healthy? and ?wholesome? were misleading consumers because some of the company's products contain trans fats.

Better survival rates seen with lumpectomy compared with mastectomy for early breast cancer

A new analysis has found that lumpectomy plus radiation for early breast cancer may provide patients with a better chance of survival than mastectomy. Published early online in CANCER, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society, the results provide confidence in the efficacy of breast-conserving treatments even among patients with aggressive, early disease.

Lumpectomy combined with radiation is a good treatment choice for women with early breast cancer; however, over the past 10 years, a growing number of women have been choosing mastectomy even for very small cancers. In certain populationssuch as women who are young and those living in urban areas with high socioeconomic statusthis trend has been most pronounced due to the perception that outcomes may be better with mastectomy than with lumpectomy.

Shelley Hwang MD, MPH, of the Duke Cancer Institute, and her colleagues looked to see whether some populations of women do in fact have better outcomes after mastectomy compared with lumpectomy and radiation. The researchers obtained information regarding all women who were diagnosed in the state of California with stage I or II breast cancer between 1990 and 2004 and who were treated with either mastectomy or lumpectomy plus radiation. The investigators followed 112,154 cases through 2009, and they looked for patterns among different age groups and across different breast cancer types.

In the first three years after surgery, women who underwent mastectomy had a higher risk of dying from heart disease and other diseases than women who underwent lumpectomy, possibly indicating that the latter group was generally healthier, according to Dr. Hwang. Over the entire study period, women were more likely to survive breast cancer after undergoing lumpectomy plus radiation than mastectomy. This was true among all age groups and cancer types, with the biggest benefit seen in women over 50 years of age with hormone-sensitive breast cancer. These women had a 14 percent decreased risk of dying from breast cancer during the study compared with their counterparts who underwent mastectomy.

"The findings in this study should reassure women that among all age groups and tumor types, lumpectomy continues to be an excellent choice for women with small early breast cancers," said Dr.

Hwang.

Death toll rising in Egypt riot after soccer violence verdict

CAIRO (AP) ? An Egyptian court sentenced 21 people to death Saturday on charges related to one of the world's deadliest incidents of soccer violence, touching off an attempted jailbreak and a riot that killed 16 in the Mediterranean port city that is home to most of the defendants.

The verdict follows deadly clashes between police and demonstrators on Friday, the second anniversary of the uprising that overthrew longtime leader Hosni Mubarak. Such cycles of violence, often lasting for weeks and costing dozens of lives, have occurred regularly over the past two years.

Die-hard soccer fans from both teams, known as Ultras, hold the police at least partially responsible for the Port Said deaths and criticize Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi for doing little to reform the force.

Al-Ahly Ultras in particular have been at the forefront of protests. But anger also is boiling in Port Said, where residents say they have been unfairly scapegoated.

Immediately after the verdict, two police were shot dead outside Port Said's main prison when angry relatives tried to storm the facility to free the defendants. Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets, as well as live rounds, at the crowd outside the prison, killing 14, security officials said. Hundreds were wounded. They spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

Security officials said the military is being deployed to Port Said ? the second such deployment in less than 24 hours. The army was widely used to keep order by top generals who took over after Mubarak, but the military has kept a much lower profile since Morsi was elected as president in June.

Morsi cancelled a scheduled trip to Ethiopia Saturday and instead met for the first time with top generals as part of the newly-formed National Defense Council.

The military was also deployed overnight in the city of Suez after eight people died in clashes between security forces and protesters opposed to Morsi. Another protester was killed in Ismailiya, and security officials told the state news agency MENA that two policemen were killed in Friday's protests, bringing the death toll on the second anniversary of Egypt's uprising to 11.

Judge Sobhi Abdel-Maguid read out the death sentences related to the Feb. 1 riot in Port Said that killed 74 fans of the Cairo-based Al-Ahly team. Defendants' lawyers said all those sentenced were fans of the Port Said team, Al-Masry. Executions in Egypt are usually carried out by hanging.

The judge Saturday said in his statement read live on state TV that he would announce the verdict for the remaining 52 defendants on March 9.

Among those on trial are nine security officials, but none were handed sentences Saturday, lawyers and security officials say.

Fans of al-Ahly, whose stands were attacked by rival club Al-Masry in the Feb. 1 incident in Port Said, had promised more violence if the accused did not receive death sentences. In the days leading up to the verdict, Al-Ahly fans warned of bloodshed and "retribution". Hundreds of Al-Ahly fans gathered outside the Cairo sports club in anticipation of the verdict, chanting against the police and the government.

Before the judge could read out the names of the 21, families erupted in screams of "Allahu Akbar!" Arabic for God is great, with their hands in the air and waving pictures of the deceased. One man fainted while others hugged one another. The judge smacked the bench several times to try and contain reaction in the courtroom.

"This was necessary," said Nour al-Sabah, whose 17 year-old son Ahmed Zakaria died in the melee. "Now I want to see the guys when they are executed with my own eyes, just as they saw the murder of my son."

The verdict is not expected to calm tensions between the two rival teams. The judge is expected to make public his reasons for the death sentences March 9, when the remaining 52 defendants receive their sentences.

A Port Said resident and lawyer of one of the defendants given a death sentence said the verdict was nothing more than "a political decision to calm the public."

"There is nothing to say these people did anything and we don't understand what this verdict is based on," Mohammed al-Daw told The Associated Press by telephone.

"Our situation in Port Said is very grave because kids were taken from their homes for wearing green T-shirts," he said, referring to the Al-Masry team color.

The violence began after the Port Said's home team won the match, 3-1. Al-Masry fans stormed the pitch after the game ended, attacking Cairo's Al-Ahly fans.

Authorities shut off the stadium lights, plunging it into darkness. In the exit corridor, the fleeing crowd pressed against a chained gate until it broke open. Many were crushed under the crowd of people trying to flee.

Survivors of the riot described a nightmarish scene in the stadium. Police stood by doing nothing, they said, as fans of Al-Masry attacked supporters of the top Cairo club stabbing them and throwing them off bleachers.

Al-Ahly survivors said supporters of Al-Masry carved the words "Port Said" into their bodies and undressed them while beating them with iron bars.

While there has long been bad blood between the two rival teams, many blamed police for failing to perform usual searches for weapons at the stadium.

Both Al-Ahly Ultras and Al-Masry Ultras widely believe that ex-members of the ousted regime of Hosni Mubarak helped instigate the attack, and that the police at the very least were responsible for gross negligence. It is not clear what kind of evidence, if any, was presented to the court to back up claims that the attack had been orchestrated by regime officials.

"The police are thugs!" yelled relatives of the deceased inside the courtroom before the judge took the bench.

As is customary in Egypt, the death sentences will be sent to the nation's top religious authority, the Grand Mufti, for approval, though the court has final say on the matter.

All of the defendants ? who were not present in the courtroom Saturday for security reasons ? have the right to appeal the verdict.

The melee was the world's deadliest soccer violence in 15 years.

The Ultras are proud of their hatred for the police, who were the backbone of Mubarak's authoritarian rule. They then then directed their chants against the military rulers who took over after Mubarak's ouster.

Ultras from several Egyptian sports clubs were engaged in deadly clashes with police near the Interior Ministry headquarters in Cairo that killed 42 people less than three months before the soccer melee in Port Said.

Health care among early leaders in the S&P 500

NEW YORK (AP) ? Health care stocks have started off the year on a tear.

The industry group that includes health care providers, drugmakers and biotechnology companies has advanced 7.3 percent this year, making it the second-best in the Standard and Poor's 500 index, trailing only energy companies. Even drugmakers, traditionally considered a safe-haven play, are outperforming the market.

The rally has solid foundations, but not all companies will benefit equally from the influx of cash. Also, the wide range of stocks in the sector offer investors vastly differing risk and return dynamics.

U.S. health care spending is projected to climb at a faster pace than economic growth in coming years as the population ages and President Barack Obama's Affordable Care Act gives millions of Americans greater access to care.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services projects that total health care spending will rise 70 percent over last year's estimated level of $2.8 trillion to $4.8 trillion by 2021. That's almost 20 percent of U.S. gross domestic product.

"There's just a lot more money flowing into health care and we're seeing the markets react accordingly," says Derek Taner, a portfolio manager at Invesco.

President Obama's re-election in November gave the sector a boost by removing the uncertainty surrounding the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. Republican candidate Mitt Romney had said that he would overturn the act if elected.

The biggest beneficiaries of the act will likely be hospital companies, which have the potential to increase their earnings significantly, says Taner, who manages Invesco's Global Health Care fund.

So-called managed-care companies should also benefit from the increase in spending, though they also face higher taxes and restrictions on how they can price their coverage, so the law will be challenging to them too.

HCA Holdings Inc., a bellwether for the hospital industry, has gained 25 percent so far this year. Tenet Healthcare Corp., a Dallas-based operator of acute care hospitals, has advanced 20 percent.

Drugmakers, often regarded as defensive growth companies by analysts, are also emerging from the doldrums after lagging the broader index for much of the last decade.

Pfizer Inc., the world's biggest drugmaker by revenue, has returned 31 percent over the last 10 years, compared with 113 percent for the S&P 500.

The big pharmaceutical companies were shunned by investors as they faced challenges from rising research costs and the economic slump in Europe, which prompted governments to try to rein in health care spending.

Drug companies were also hurt by what the industry dubbed the "patent cliff," as an unprecedented number of patents expired on drugs worth billions of dollars in sales. The expiration of patents allows cheaper generic versions of drugs to replace blockbuster products. That hurts sales.

Pfizer lost exclusivity for its cholesterol-fighting drug Lipitor in the U.S. in November 2011. In its most recent earnings report, Pfizer said that U.S. revenues from the drug plunged 87 percent in the third quarter of 2012 to $192 million. The company will release its fourth-quarter earnings Tuesday.

The worst of the impact of patent expiration may now be over for the drugmakers, and the market has already factored it into stock prices, says Mark Bussard, a health care analyst at fund manager T. Rowe Price.

"The 'patent cliff' for most of the companies has now come and gone," says Bussard, who is a physician by training. "Some of the largest losses to generic competition are in the rear-view mirror now."

Approvals for first-of-a-kind drugs have also been climbing as drugmakers continue to pursue an emerging business model focused on treatments for rare and hard-to-treat diseases.

The Food and Drug Administration approved 39 new drugs last year, up from 30 the year before and the highest annual tally since 1997, when the agency also approved 39 drugs.

In addition to being relatively low-risk investments, due to the steady demand for drugs, Big Pharma also pays big dividends.

The largest drug companies in the S&P 500 have higher dividend yields than the broader index, which yields 2.1 percent. Pfizer currently has a 3.6 percent yield and Merck & Co. yields 4 percent.

Biotechnology companies are possibly the most exciting companies in the sector and are also advancing.

Investing in this sector can be challenging, though, as the vast majority of drugs being developed don't work out.

"It's probably unwise ... to try to pick the individual winner," says Sam Isaly, the manager of Eaton Vance's Worldwide Health Sciences Fund. "It depends on whether you're a lotto player or not."

While the Affordable Care Act ensures that money will flow into the industry in the near term, that spending can't keep rising exponentially. At some point, the focus will turn to the cost of the reforms, particularly if the initial spending estimates are exceeded, causing renewed uncertainty for the industry.

"That's a longer-term concern that is going to come into play at some point," says Invesco's Taner. "Right now we're in the honeymoon period. People aren't thinking about that."

And if history is a guide, the cost estimates will likely prove too low.

Upon passing the Medicare bill in 1965, the House Ways and Means Committee estimated total program expenditures would amount to $1.3 billion in 1967. That estimate proved to be "wildly optimistic," with the actual cost coming in at $4.6 billion, according to research by Citigroup health care analysts.

To counter the rising costs, governments and employers will increasingly try to shift more of the cost to individual consumers, transforming the industry from an "employer-driven insurance market" to an "employee-driven consumer market," says Eddie Yoon of Fidelity.

"The companies that are the most innovative in helping drive costs down are going to be the growth companies of tomorrow," says Yoon, who manages the investment firm's Select Health Care Portfolio.

Iran official: Attack on Syria is attack on Iran

BEIRUT (AP) ? Issuing Tehran's strongest warning to date, a top Iranian official said Saturday that any attack on Syria would be deemed an attack on Iran, a sign that it will do all it can to protect embattled Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Ali Akbar Velayati, an aide to Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, made his comments as Syrian troops conducted offensive air raids against rebels and discovered a trio of tunnels they were using to smuggle weapons in their fight to topple Assad.

The world has been grappling over how to deal with Syria ever since an uprising against Assad's regime erupted nearly two years ago. But so far, there has been no international intervention on the ground where more than 60,000 people have been killed, according to the U.N.

Iran is Syria's strongest ally in the Middle East, and has provided Assad's government with military and political backing for years. In September, the top commander of Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard, Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari, said the elite unit had high-level advisers in Syria. Iran also is believed to be sending weapons and money to Syria as it endures its worst crisis in decades.

"Syria plays a very key role in supporting or, God forbid, destabilizing the resistance front," Velayati was quoted by Iran's semiofficial Mehr news agency as saying. "For this same reason, (an) attack on Syria is considered (an) attack on Iran and Iran's allies."

By backing the rebels trying to oust the Syrian leader, the U.S. and Arab states in the Gulf attacked the "golden ring of resistance," Valayati said, referring to the militant groups, Hamas and Hezbollah, and Iran and Syria, which are all anti-American.

Iran also is at odds with the international community over its nuclear program, although Iran insists it is using the program solely for peaceful purposes, not nuclear weapons.

A former Iranian diplomat who defected to the West in 2010 told Israel's channel 2 TV in an interview broadcast on Friday that if Tehran acquired nuclear weapons, it would use them against Israel.

Mohammad Reza Heydari, who has political asylum in Norway, claimed that Venezuela was flying uranium and various components for nuclear weapons to Tehran. Venezuela backs Iran in arguing the nuclear program is purely for peaceful purposes.

Since the unrest in Syria began in March 2011, opposition forces have taken control of wide swathes of territory, mostly in the north near Syria's border with Turkey.

NATO said Saturday that the first of six Patriot missile batteries being deployed to Turkey to shoot down missiles that might come from the Syrian side of the border was now operational. The battery, meant to protect the Turkish city of Adana, was provided by the Netherlands.

The United States, Germany and the Netherlands are providing two batteries each of the latest version of the U.S.-made Patriots. The other five Patriot batteries are expected to be operational in the coming days in Adana, Kahramanmaras and Gaziantep.

NATO says the Patriots would be used for defensive purposes only. Syria has not fired any of its surface-to-surface missiles at Turkey during the civil war, but the Assad regime has described the NATO deployment as a provocation.

The alliance also deployed Patriot batteries to Turkey during the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq 10 years ago. They were never used and were withdrawn a few months later.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, interviewed on Turkish television late Friday, said the Syrian opposition now controls some 70 percent of Syria.

"If you ask me if Bashar is able endure much longer, I say, Bashar is walking, propped up from behind," said Erdogan, who was a close ally of Assad's until the crisis began. "He is losing the support of the Syrian people every day."

"At the moment Damascus is under siege. Aleppo is to a great degree already under the hands of the opposition. In other words, I can say that some 70 percent of the country is under the control of the opposition," Erdogan said.

In the Turkish capital, Istanbul, members of the Syrian opposition gathered Saturday to kick-off a conference aimed at establishing a transitional justice system in Syria after the fall of Assad's regime. The two-day meeting was organized by the U.S.-based Syrian Center for Political and Strategic Studies.

In fighting on Saturday, Syrian forces clashing with rebels uncovered tunnels they were using to smuggle weapons and move around Daraya, a strategic suburb of the capital, Damascus, the state-run news agency said.

Syrian troops have been trying to capture Daraya for weeks, but have faced strong resistance from hundreds of rebels who have used Damascus suburbs to stage attacks on nearby government facilities.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and another activist group, the Local Coordination Committees, also reported shelling and air raids in other Damascus suburbs, including Shebaa and Aqraba near the international airport.

The LCC also said rebels fired several rockets from Daraya toward Assad's People's Palace on Qasioun Mountain, overlooking the capital. Syrian officials have previously denied claims by rebels that rockets have targeted the palace ? one of three mansions Assad uses in the capital.

The activist groups also reported heavy clashes in the central city of Homs and the nearby town of Qusair, which is close to the border with Lebanon, and near a prison in the northwestern city of Idlib.

In the north, the Observatory reported two air raids ? one in Al-Bab. which killed at least four people, and another in Manbij, which killed at least 12 people, including four children and women.

Doctors Without Borders, an international medical team, said a growing number of attacks in the northern province of Aleppo are likely to undermine its ability to provide medical care.

"Besides the war-wounded and the direct victims of violence, the conflict is affecting the most vulnerable, especially people with chronic diseases, women and children," said Miriam Al?a, medical coordinator for the organization.

White House, senators launching immigration push

(AP) ? Reviving an issue that has languished for years, President Barack Obama will launch a campaign next week aimed at overhauling the nation's flawed immigration system and creating legal status for millions, as a bipartisan Senate group nears agreement on achieving the same goals.

The proposals from Obama and lawmakers will mark the start of what is expected to be a contentious and emotional process with deep political implications. Latino voters overwhelmingly backed Obama in the 2012 election, leaving Republicans grappling for a way to regain their standing with an increasingly powerful pool of voters.

The president will press his case for immigration changes during a trip to Las Vegas Tuesday. The Senate working group is also aiming to outline its proposals next week, according to a Senate aide.

Administration officials say Obama's second-term immigration push will be a continuation of the principles he outlined during his first four years in office but failed to act on. He is expected to revive his little-noticed 2011 immigration "blueprint," which calls for a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants that includes paying fines and back taxes; increased border security; mandatory penalties for businesses that employ unauthorized immigrants; and improvements to the legal immigration system, including giving green cards to high-skilled workers and lifting caps on legal immigration for the immediate family members of U.S. citizens.

"What has been absent in the time since he put those principles forward has been a willingness by Republicans, generally speaking, to move forward with comprehensive immigration reform," White House press secretary Jay Carney said. "What he hopes is that that dynamic has changed."

The political dynamic does appear to have shifted following the November election. Despite making little progress on immigration in his first term, Obama won more than 70 percent of the Latino vote, in part because of the conservative positions on immigration that Republican nominee Mitt Romney staked out during the GOP primary. Latino voters accounted for 10 percent of the electorate in November.

The president met privately Friday morning with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus to discuss his next steps on immigration. Among those in the meeting was Rep. Linda Sanchez, D-Calif., who said Obama told lawmakers "immigration reform is his number one legislative priority."

That could bump back the president's efforts to seek legislation enacting stricter gun laws, another issue he has vowed to make a top second term priority.

The Senate immigration group is also pressing for quick action, aiming to draft a bill by March and pass legislation in their chamber by August, said the aide, who requested anonymity in order to discuss private deliberations. The Republican-controlled House would also need to pass the legislation before it went to the White House for the president's signature.

Senate lawmakers working on the immigration effort include Democrats Charles Schumer of New York, Dick Durbin of Illinois and Robert Menendez of New Jersey; and Republicans John McCain of Arizona, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Marco Rubio of Florida, according to Senate aides.

Democrat Michael Bennet of Colorado, and Republicans Jeff Flake of Arizona and Mike Lee of Utah have also been involved. It's not clear whether all those involved will sign on to the principles the group hopes to roll out next week.

Those principles are expected to include a process toward legalizing the status of unauthorized immigrants already in the country; border security; verification measures for employers hiring workers and ways for more temporary workers to be admitted into the country.

It's unclear whether the group will back the pathway to full citizenship that the president is seeking. Schumer and Graham have previously supported requiring illegal immigrants to admit they broke the law, perform community service, pay fines and back taxes, pass background checks and learn English before going to the back of the line of immigrants already in the system in order to legalize their immigration status.

Several of the senators negotiating the immigration principles are veterans of the failed comprehensive immigration reform effort under then-President George W. Bush. That process collapsed in 2007 when it came up well-short of the needed votes in the Senate, a bitter outcome for Bush and the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, the Democrats' leader on the legislation.

Some Republicans still lament that result as a missed opportunity for the party that could have set the GOP on a different path to reach more Latino voters.

Rubio is a relative newcomer to Senate negotiations on the issue, but he's seen as a rising star in his party and a potential 2016 presidential candidate. As a charismatic young Hispanic leader his proposals on immigration have attracted wide notice in recent weeks. And as a conservative favorite, unlike McCain or Graham, his stamp of approval could be critical to drawing in other conservative lawmakers.

A Republican aide said that Rubio has made clear in his interactions with the Senate group that he couldn't sign on to proposals that deviated from the principles he himself has been laying out in recent media interviews, including border security first, a guest-worker program, more visas for high-tech workers and enforcement in the workplace.

As for the illegal immigrants already in the country, Rubio would have them pay a fine and back taxes, show they have not committed crimes, prove they've been in the country for some time and speak some English and apply for permanent residency. Ultimately citizenship too could be in reach but only after a process that doesn't nudge aside immigrants already in line, and Rubio hasn't provided details on how long it all might take.

PRESS RELEASE

OVER 5,000 GAMING FANS HAVE THEIR SAY IN ONLINE VOTE GLaDOS FROM THE PORTAL SERIES IS BEATEN INTO RUNNER UP POSITION

LONDON (24 January, 2013)?? Today, Guinness World Records, the global authority on record-breaking, announce the?Top 50 Video Game Villains of All Time?as voted for by over 5,000 of their readers.? The list, which is revealed in its entirety in the new?Guinness World Records 2013 Gamer?s Edition?book, sees the iconic Bowser from Nintendo?s long-running Mario franchise crowned king, with Portal?s GLaDOS beaten into runner up spot.

Bowser, from one of the most iconic and best-selling video game franchises of all time,?Super Mario Bros.?(Nintendo, 1985) landed top spot with over 20% of the vote.?? Mario?s arch enemy is nothing if not persistent: few enemies would attempt to kidnap the same princess twice, let alone eight times during the past 28 years!? It seems his malevolent persistence has paid off with the ?King of Koopas? becoming the king of the videogame villains.

The runner-up comes courtesy of the recent?Portal?series (Valve, 2007). Only a small share of the vote kept GLaDOS, the ominous, AI computer system off top spot. The ever-present computer voice that follows players throughout the game, acts simultaneously as a guide, narrator, and final boss. The doyenne?s sinister wit and monotone delivery keeps players constantly on edge.

Rounding out the top three is a giant in video games, comics,?and?film. The Joker?s performance in?Batman: Arkham Asylum?(Rocksteady, 2009) was deemed suitably unhinged as he stalks Batman through the disgusting, titular sanatorium.
Kevin Lynch, writer for Guinness World Records 2013 Gamer?s Editionsaid: ?It was really interesting for us to put the vote out to our readers and see who their favourite villain was ? Bowser?s top place is no big shocker, but there certainly are surprises in there.? I think what this list really reflects is that video game villains tend to be a lot cooler than the heroes they?re pitted against.?

The remainder of the Top 50 shows just how diverse video game villains can be. The Great King of Evil Ganon (The Legend of Zelda?? Nintendo EAD, 1996), corporate experiment Sephiroth (Final Fantasy VII ??Square, 1997), and lovable-yet-infuriating ghost Inky (PAC-MAN ??Namco, 1980) all make the Top 10, and demonstrate that the creativity behind making an antagonist can be just as deep as concocting a hero. Other notables to make the list include Donkey Kong (#14), the Police in?Grand Theft Auto?(#24), and?Mortal Kombat?s Shao Kahn (#41).

A total of 5,699 total votes were cast on the Guinness World Records website. The full list is featured in the new?Guinness World Records 2013 Gamer?s Editionbook out now for ?9.99. For more information please visitwww.guinnessworldrecords.com/gamers
