Top 5 Android phones of 2012

It?s that time of year again. The mobile world?s biggest players have released all their best handsets and are now just watching to see how many fly off the shelves ahead of Christmas.

So, what better time to look at the best blowers of 2012, starting with those toting Google?s ever-improving Android OS. Here?s our five favourites.

5 HTC One X

htc one x official

HTC has had a pretty torrid year, with sales down and a deal with Apple over patents reportedly leaving it having to pay around $8 to Cupertino per Android device sold.

But the One X phone shows it can still make amazing hardware. Not only does it have a beautiful overall design, its 4.7-inch screen is a thing of beauty and its eight-megapixel camera is a more than ample compact snapper replacement. With a Jelly Bean update on its way out as we speak, this is still a phone worth buying.

4 Samsung Galaxy Note 2

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 flat slanted

Sammy?s monster follow-up to its first ?phone-tablet? may be a touch too big for smaller palms, but still makes a great compromise between the two forms.

This is currently Samsung?s leading Android mobile, its vast 5.5-inch panel and quad-core CPU taking it well beyond most rivals. A phone that has garnered much love from press and public alike, it paved the way for bigger blowers to make a real leap in 2013.

3 Sony Xperia S

Sony Xperia S Silver

The first phone from the Big S after it bought out Ericsson and went it alone after years of so-so devices, the Xperia S marks a true return to form. The design is superb and acts as a timely reminder as to why Sony has been a big player in tech for decades and the Bravia Engine ensures things tick along at lightning pace.

The only issue is its lack of Android Jelly Bean, slow upgrades seemingly a habit Sony hasn?t ditched from its days of working with Ericsson.

2 Google Nexus 4

lg nexus 4 large

It might be a latecomer, but boy has the Nexus 4 shaken things up. A truly high-end device that starts at a piffling ?239 for an 8GB model and ?279 for a 16GB version, it?s half the iPhone 5?s price and every bit as good.

Forget the occasionally average design and marvel at that vast 4.7-inch display, the latest Jelly Bean 4.2 software including all of Google?s newest OS features, a camera that knocks spots off of every competitor and maps that batter Apple?s woeful effort.

1 Samsung Galaxy S3

samsung galaxy s3 red

The undoubted top pick. Since its May release, the Galaxy S3 has become the go-to phone for anyone not feeling the allure of the iPhone.

Its eyeball-stroking super AMOLED panel, bleeding edge Android updates and slim profile make, not to mention expandable storage up to 64GB (a huge boon compared to top-end smartphone rivals) put it in a league of its own until Apple and Google/LG waited until the year?s end to roll out decent competitors.

Network Security Challenges for Business in 2013

One might say that network security is a living organism, constantly changing, ebbing and flowing with the ever-expanding breadth of new technology. This should be a concern for business owners using digital networks as an efficient way to conduct work and provide services. There are certainly ways for companies to secure their networks and servers, but there is always a cyber criminal waiting to find cracks in any system. Keeping this in mind, here are some major cyber problems heading into the New Year:

Passwords ? 2012 was certainly a rough time for many computer users ? at least for those who didn?t choose creative and tough-to-guess passwords. This was especially true for many celebrities who got their email accounts hacked by choosing security questions a simple Google search could crack. With the advent of brute force password attacks potentially behind us, it seems like more and more hackers are gaining legitimate access to accounts by merely guessing passwords. Make sure your company has a strict system for creating difficult passwords.

Mobile ? The ability for business owners and employees to run an entire network on a smartphone or tablet is nothing sort of awesome. However, hackers are increasingly interested in gaining access to your phone?s information as well ? whether you are playing Angry Birds or swiping a client credit card using a reader like Square. Keeping your smartphone as up-to-date with security as your office network is a major concern going into next year.

Clouds ? The cloud-based system of data management is a cost-effective and simplistic way of storing your company?s information whilst keeping it synced across many devices. As small and medium-sized businesses begin to adopt this technology, clouds will need to become more secure, providing the safety that business information needs.

To help prevent any cyber crimes like theft or data attacks from happening at your business, please contact an independent network security company.

You can leave a response, or trackback from your own site.

Merry Christmas 2012 | World of Psychology

I?d like to take this moment to wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas!

May the joy and peace of the season be with your family, your friends, and most of all, with you. Whether you spend it with others or on your own, remember that the holiday lasts for only a very short time each year ? so savor it. (And if you?re not a great lover of this holiday, well, it?ll be over before you know it now.)

And from one of my favorite classics, White Christmas:

If you?re worried and you can?t sleep,
Just count your blessings instead of sheep,
And you?ll fall asleep? counting your blessings.

From our entire Psych Central family ? the staff, writers, bloggers, editors, community volunteers, moderators and administrators ? we wish you a wonderful and joyous Christmas. Peace.

(AP) ? Syrian rebels fully captured a northern town near the Turkish border on Tuesday after weeks of heavy fighting and attacked a regime air base in a neighboring province, activists said.

The air base is in Aleppo province, where opposition fighters have already captured three other large military bases in recent months. Rebels have also laid siege to the international airport in the city of Aleppo, Syria's commercial capital, and launched an offensive on the police academy near the city.

With steady rebel gains across the north, President Bashar Assad's regime is having increasing difficulty sending supplies by land to Aleppo province, especially after rebels cut a major thoroughfare from Damascus. It is just another sign that the opposition is consolidating its grip across large swathes of territory in northern Syria near the Turkish border.

In his traditional Christmas address, Pope Benedict XVI decried the slaughter of the "defenseless" in Syria, where anti-regime activists estimate more than 40,000 have died in fighting since the uprising against President Bashar Assad's rule began in March 2011.

In another blow to the regime, activists said that Mohammed Adnan Arabo, a member of Syria's parliament has left the country and joined the opposition. Ahmad Ramadan, an executive council member of the opposition Syrian National Council group, and other activists said Arabo arrived in Turkey on Tuesday.

He said the regime's hold on power is deteriorating and rebels are besieging military bases for weeks until they either take over or negotiate with local army commanders to surrender. He added that some regime forces are being diverted to the capital to fight there.

"The regime cannot protect its bases and also cannot send forces to support troops under siege," he said.

Over the weeks, rebels fighting to overthrow Assad have also been able to take the battles into the capital Damascus, Assad's seat of power, where the southern neighborhoods are witnessing almost daily clashes between troops and rebels.

The big successes began in mid-November, when rebels captured Aleppo's Regiment 46, a large military base, carting off tanks, armored vehicles and truck-loads of munitions. Three weeks later, they captured the Sheik Suleiman base near the provincial capital of Aleppo and days later they took an infantry base in the city.

Last week, they captured an army technical regiment near Damascus' international airport but were pushed back in a counter attack. The army command said in a statement that the regiment's commander was killed in the battle.

The rebels have also brought the battle to areas around Damascus international airport where some flights were cancelled earlier this month because of the intensity of the fighting.

One of the biggest blows came in Damascus on Dec. 12 when a suicide attacker blew his vehicle outside the Interior Ministry, killing five and wounding many, including Interior Minister Mohammed al-Shaar. The government denied at first that al-Shaar had been wounded until it got out when he was brought last week to a Beirut hospital for treatment.

It was the second injury the minister suffered after being wounded in a July 17, bomb inside a high-level crisis meeting in Damascus that killed four top regime officials, including Assad's brother-in-law and the defense minister.

The rebel takeover of Harem, a town of 20,000 in northern Idlib province, was the latest in a string of recent rebel successes.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the rebels captured Harem in the early hours of Tuesday. Mohammed Kanaan, an Idlib-based activist, said the last post to be taken was the historic citadel, which overlooked the town. The army had turned the citadel into a military post.

"Harem is fully liberated now," Kanaan said via Skype. He added that as the rebels pounded army posts and checkpoints in Harem, the troops withdrew to the citadel that later fell in the hands of rebels.

Rami-Abdul-Rahman, who heads to Observatory, said nearly 30 soldiers and pro-government gunmen surrendered late Monday. He added that rebels set free all gunmen at the age of 16 or less and referred others to local tribunals.

"Harem was very important because it is one of the towns that was loyal to the regime," Abdul-Rahman said by telephone about the town that is nearly a mile from the Turkish border.

In Aleppo province, which neighbors Idlib, local activist Mohammed Saeed said rebels attacked the air base in the town of Mannagh near the Turkish border. He said it is one of four air bases in the province, adding that rebels also attacked the police academy near the city of Aleppo.

Regime forces have been using helicopters to carry supplies to besieged areas and to attack rebel positions.

The regime has had increasing difficulty sending supplies by land to Aleppo province after rebels captured in October the strategic town Maaret al-Numan. The town is on the highway that links Damascus with Aleppo, Syria's largest city and a major battleground in the civil war since July.

"Airplanes and helicopters are the only way to send supplies since the Free Syrian Army controls the land," Saeed said. He added that rebels are also laying a siege to Aleppo's international airport known as Nairab and threatening to shoot down military or civilians planes using it.

In the Damascus suburb of Jaramana, opposition gunmen ambushed the head of military intelligence in the area and seriously wounded him. He later died of his wounds, the Observatory said.

Elsewhere in Syria, the Observatory reported violence in areas including the eastern province of Deir el-Zour, the southern area of Quneitra on the edge of the Israeli-occupied Golan Height and the southern region of Daraa.

In Israel, top officials said they cannot corroborate Syrian activists' claims that the regime has used chemical weapons against its citizens.

Vice Premier Moshe Yaalon told Army Radio that Israel has "no confirmation or proof" the regime has employed such weapons in the civil war. He says Israel is "monitoring the situation with concern."

Defense Ministry official Amos Gilad told Israel Radio that Syria was closely guarding its chemical weapons stockpiles.

On Monday, the Observatory quoted activists in the central city of Homs as saying that six rebels died in two neighborhoods the day before after inhaling white smoke that came out of shells fired by government troops in the area. Amateur videos released by activists showed men in hospital beds suffering breathing problems as doctors placed oxygen masks over their faces.

Funerals begin for Newtown victims as schools confront tragedy

FAIRFIELD/NEWTOWN, Connecticut (Reuters) - One boy was buried in his hero's football jersey in a small white coffin. Balloons and a teddy bear welcomed mourners to the funeral of his first grade schoolmate.

The two funerals on Monday ushered in what will be a week of memorial services and burials for the 20 children and six adults massacred at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

The shooting sent waves of anxiety across the country on the first school day since a 20-year-old gunman opened fire on the students and teachers in the close-knit community last week.

Within hours of the school starting bell on Monday, lockdowns were declared in nearby Connecticut and New York towns on fears of danger. And in southern California, Indiana and Tennessee, authorities arrested men on Sunday for making threats against schools.

Newtown's schools remained closed after a weekend of mourning that followed Adam Lanza's shooting spree on Friday that claimed 28 lives, including his mother's and his own.

Miniature caskets marked the first wave of funerals as Noah Pozner and Jack Pinto, both 6 years old, were laid to rest on Monday afternoon. Noah was the youngest victim of rampage and his twin sister, Arielle, escaped unhurt.

Under chilly, leaden skies, police and bomb-sniffing dogs conducted a precautionary search of the street lined with white balloons outside the Fairfield, Connecticut, funeral home where Noah's brief life was remembered.

A teddy bear and bouquet of white flowers lay at the base of an oak tree outside the Jewish service that was packed with mourners, including Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy, U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal and Senator-elect Chris Murphy.

"Every time I told Noah, 'I love you,' he always answered, 'Not as much as I love you,'" his mother, Veronique Pozner, told mourners at his funeral, recalled Rabbi Edgar Gluck after the burial service.

In Noah's obituary in the Newtown Bee newspaper, his parents and four siblings said, "Noah was an impish, larger-than-life little boy. Everything he did conveyed action and energy through love. He was the light of our family, a little soul devoid of spite and meanness."

At Jack Pinto's funeral in Newtown, about a half dozen children wearing a wrestling's club gold medals took off the awards and gave them to their teammate's parents. A New York Giants fan, Jack was wearing a red-and-white jersey with receiver Victor Cruz's number 80 as he lay in an open white casket at the service. During Sunday's game, Cruz wore shoes with "R.I.P. Jack Pinto" written on the side.

"Jack was an incredibly loving and vivacious young boy, appreciated by all who knew him for his lively and giving spirit and steely determination," his parents, Dean and Tricia Pinto, and brother said in his obituary in the Newtown Bee.

Active in sports from football to skiing, he was remembered "for the immeasurable joy he brought to all who had the pleasure of knowing him, a joy whose wide reach belied his six short years."

Their funerals came a day after President Barack Obama visited Newtown to comfort the families, promising action to stop future tragedies. Obama's remarks were heralded on Monday morning by relatives of teacher Victoria Soto, 27, who was killed as she tried to protect her first-grade students.

"He really made us feel like she really was a hero and that everyone should know it," her younger brother, Carlos Soto, told CBS "This Morning."

Later Monday, White House spokesman said Obama's plan for action to curb violence includes gun control "but is far from all of it."

All the dead children were 6 or 7 years old. The school principal of Sandy Hook Elementary, the school psychologist and four teachers were also gunned down.

With Newtown schools closed on Monday, about 200 volunteers set up an indoor play day to keep children busy on a drizzly Monday. Inside a local youth academy, whose doorway was marked by holiday wreaths and 26 black ribbons, volunteers urged a boy wearing Spider-Man sneakers, a girl carrying a stuffed Dalmatian toy and about 1,000 other children to join in athletics, board games and arts and crafts.

A more detailed picture of Lanza's stunning attack has emerged.

After killing his mother, Nancy Lanza, at home, Adam Lanza shot his way into the school. He had attended Sandy Hook as a child, according to former classmates, but authorities said on Monday he had no current connection with the school.

Police said Lanza was armed with hundreds of bullets in high-capacity magazines of about 30 rounds each for the Bushmaster AR 15 rifle and two handguns he carried into the school, and had a fourth weapon, a shotgun, in his car outside. He killed himself in the school.

In Washington, a growing number of U.S. lawmakers - including a leading pro-gun senator - called for a look at curbing assault weapons like the one used in the massacre, a sign that attitudes toward gun control could be shifting.

"Never before have we seen our babies slaughtered. This never happened in America, that I can recall, ever seeing this kind of carnage," said Senator Joe Manchin, a West Virginia Democrat who has earned top marks from the gun industry. "This has changed where we go from here."

Campaign for IOC president takes shape, quietly

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) -- Thomas Bach strides through the hotel lobby between meetings with a phone pressed to his ear. Over in one corner of the foyer sits Richard Carrion, deep in discussion with a fellow member. A few tables away, Ng Ser Miang chats with a colleague over a cup of tea.

All in the same room, three leading contenders all quietly engaged in the so-far unofficial campaign for perhaps the most powerful job in world sports: president of the International Olympic Committee.

Just don't say out loud that that the race is on.

With the election nine months away, the campaign to succeed Jacques Rogge is forging ahead behind the scenes without fanfare, policy platforms, debates - or any declared candidates for that matter.

Head of GM's Opel says talks with PSA on track: paper

VIENNA (Reuters) - Talks between General Motors' Opel unit and France's PSA Peugeot Citroen on joint vehicle development are on track, while there are no plans at this stage to build cars together, Opel's interim chief executive told a newspaper.

"The quality of the talks is really very good. And the operational and technical advantages are so great that we will surely will be able to wrap up soon the negotiations on joint vehicle development," Thomas Sedran told WirtschaftsWoche.

The plan is to come up with four new model series by 2016/2017: a successor to the Opel Zafira family van, two compact cars and a successor to the mid-sized Opel Insignia and Citroen C5.

GM and Peugeot unveiled an initial alliance agreement in February with the goal of saving at least $2 billion annually within five years, evenly split between the partners.

GM paid 320 million euros ($419 million) for a 7 percent stake in Peugeot as part of the original deal.

People close to the situation told Reuters last month that the partners had halted talks on an even deeper tie-up amid misgivings about the French carmaker's worsening finances and government-backed bailout.

Opel aims to boost business in Russia and Turkey by capitalizing on its German brand, Sedran also told Germany's Wirtschaftswoche.

It was working on a plan to boost Opel sales in China from 5,000 units a year now. "You can only be successful in China if you produce there. Plants in Europe aren't much help."

(AP) ? A narrow majority of Egyptians who voted in the first round of a referendum on a proposed Islamist-backed constitution have approved the document, according to unofficial tallies compiled by the Muslim Brotherhood and released early Sunday.

An official tweet by the Brotherhood, Egypt's most powerful political group, said its tallies showed nearly 57 percent of voters said "yes" to the disputed charter, while about 43 percent voted 'no.' The vote was held on Saturday in 10 of the country's 27 provinces, including Cairo and the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria, Egypt's second largest city.

Voting in the remaining provinces will be held Dec. 22.

The Brotherhood, from which President Mohammed Morsi hails, has in the past accurately predicted election results. It said some 32 percent of over 26 million registered voters participated in Saturday's poll. Egypt's remaining 25 million voters, mostly from conservative rural regions, cast ballots next week.

If the constitution is approved by a simple majority of voters, the Islamists empowered after the overthrow of longtime authoritarian leader Hosni Mubarak would likely gain more clout. The upper house of parliament, dominated by Islamists, would be given the authority to legislate until a new lower house is elected.

If the draft proposal is rejected, elections would be held within three months for a new panel to write a new constitution. In the meantime, legislative powers would remain with Morsi, who won the presidency with a narrow election victory in June.

The official website of Egypt's state television showed that 68 and 72 percent of voters cast "no" ballots in Cairo and Alexandria respectively. The only other two provinces where the "no" vote was the majority were Gharbiyah and Daqahliya in the Nile Delta, north of Cairo.

The Brotherhood and other Islamists enjoy wide support in most of the 17 provinces voting on Dec. 22, something that could raise the overall "yes" vote percentage to higher levels. But the Islamists led by the Brotherhood are widely thought to have lost some of their popularity because of the perception that Morsi and the Islamist-backed government of Prime Minister Hesham Kandil have failed to resolve any of the country's problems, like unemployment, rising prices and security.

Worse still, Egyptians are bracing for a wide range of steep price hikes as part of the government's program to boost revenues and restructure the economy to secure a $4.8 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund.

Yesterday's vote capped a near two-year struggle over Egypt's identity since the ouster of longtime leader Mubarak, with the latest crisis over the charter evolving into a dispute over whether Egypt should move toward a religious state under Morsi's Brotherhood and their ultraconservative Salafi allies, or one that retains secular traditions and an Islamic character.

Underlining the tension, some 120,000 army troops were deployed to help the police protect polling stations and state institutions after clashes between Morsi's supporters and opponents over the past three weeks left at least 10 people dead and about 1,000 wounded.

There were no serious incidents of violence during Saturday's vote. Although there was no evidence of mass fraud, monitors from the opposition and rights groups said the boycott of the referendum by most judges was reflected in the chaos prevailing in some polling centers.

The violations reported by monitors included polling centers collecting votes without judges to oversee the process, civil employees illegally replacing the judges, ballot papers not officially stamped as per regulations, campaigning inside polling stations and Christian voters being turned away.

Conn. school massacre: 28 dead, including 20 kids

The massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School shook everyone in Newtown, Conn., including the first responders, who will be undergoing counseling. NBC's Anne Thompson reports.

By Pete Williams, Miguel Llanos and Tracy Connor, NBC News

Updated at 8:25 p.m. ET:?A kindergarten teacher's son, clad in black and carrying two 9mm pistols, rampaged through a Connecticut elementary school Friday, killing 20 small children and six adults, a tragedy President Barack Obama said had broken the hearts of America.

The gunman, identified as?Adam Lanza, 20, was found dead at the scene of the slaughter, Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, law enforcement officials said. The body of a woman believed to be his mother was found at their home in Newton, authorities said.

Officials initially misidentified the shooter to NBC News as Lanza's brother, Ryan. But a senior official later said that Ryan was nowhere near the shooting, is not believed to be involved, and is cooperating with the investigation.

Ryan told police that?Adam has a history of mental illness, according to the senior official. Yet the motive for the mass killing ? the nation?s second-worst school shooting -- was a mystery.

The weapons used in the attack were legally purchased and were registered to the gunman's mother, two law enforcement officials said.?Two 9mm handguns were recovered inside the school. An AR-15-type rifle also was found at the scene, but there were conflicting reports Friday night whether it had been used in the shooting.?

Police believe Lanza fatally shot her in the face, then drove to the hilltop school where she worked and unleashed a blizzard of bullets on children and staff in two rooms before apparently taking his own life.

"Evil visited this community today," Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy said Friday evening. "We are all in this together."

Adam Lanza, the man who allegedly committed one of the worst shootings in U.S. history, was 20 years old. He entered the Sandy Hook Elementary School carrying two handguns and hundreds of rounds of ammunition, police said. NBC's Pete Williams reports.

Some young survivors -- ages 5 to 10 -- described the terror of the shooting and a massive police response that included SWAT officers going room to room to search for victims as students huddled in classroom corners.

BreakingNews.com's coverage of the incident

Robert Licata said his 6-year-old son was in class when the gunman burst in and shot the teacher.

"That's when my son grabbed a bunch of his friends and ran out the door," he told The Associated Press. "He was very brave."

One student told NBC Connecticut she was in the gym when she heard ?seven loud booms.?

?The gym teachers told us to go in the corner, so we all huddled,? she said.?"And I kept hearing these booming noises. And we all ? started crying.

"All the gym teachers told us to go into the office where no one could find us," she added. "So then a police officer came in and told us to run outside. So we did and we came in the firehouse.?

The high death toll and the tender age of many victims sent shock waves all the way to the White House, where the flag was lowered to half-staff.

President Obama, his voice cracking at times, said he reacted to the tragedy first as a parent.

?Our hearts are broken today,'' he said. ?The majority of those who died today were children. Beautiful little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old.?

Authorities in the small bedroom community 60 miles from New York City were alerted to the unfolding carnage by a 911 call around 9:30 a.m., and then reached out to state police and neighboring police departments for help.

An elementary school student recalls the terrifying moments following sounds of shots fired at her Connecticut elementary school, saying "teachers told us to go in the corner so we all huddled."

Connecticut State Police Lt. Paul Vance said troopers fanned out across the school and searched ?every door, every crack, every crevice? of the building.

Most of the bodies were found in two rooms in one section of the 600-student school, which goes up to the fourth grade.

Two children were taken to Danbury Hospital, but they died. A third person was being treated at the hospital, which went into lockdown mode and cleared trauma rooms as doctors waited for an influx of survivors that never came.

After police finished searching the school and determined there was only one gunman, they led the children outside, telling them to close their eyes, apparently to avoid seeing anything gruesome.

At a staging area ringed by police vehicles that raced to the school from across the state, the dazed and crying kids were reunited with worried loved ones.

The shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School that killed more than two dozen, 20 of them children, left the quiet community of Newtown, Conn., desperately trying to understand what happened. NBC's Kate Snow reports.

Brenda Lebinski, mother of a third-grader, said she found a ?horrendous? scene.

?Everyone was in hysterics -- parents, students. There were kids coming out of the school bloodied. I don't know if they were shot, but they were bloodied,'' she said, according to Reuters.

One parent picking up his 7-year-old son said the shooting was ?the most terrifying moment a parent can imagine." He went on to describe the anguish of waiting to find out if his son was a victim and then running to his child when he saw him.

?It was the greatest relief in my existence,? the father said. ?I?m just happy that my kid?s OK.?

The FBI was assisting with the widening investigation, and authorities said there were many unanswered questions, including the motive.

?There is a great deal of search warrant activity?in and out of the state,? Vance said, without giving specifics.

Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy was meeting with grieving families.

?As you can imagine, the governor is horrified by what?s happened,? said aide Roy Occhiogrosso.

The death toll is the highest from a school shooting since a gunman killed 32 people at Virginia Tech in 2007. At Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, two teens killed 13 people and wounded 24 in 1999.

Parent Stephen Delgiadice, whose 8-year-old daughter was not hurt, said he never could have imagined such bloodshed in the quiet town of 27,000, where the police force has only three detectives.

"It's alarming, especially in Newtown, Connecticut, which we always thought was the safest place in America," he told The Associated Press.

Obama said Friday?s shooting, following the massacre at a movie theater in Aurora, Colo., and other murder sprees, showed the need for ?meaningful action?regardless of the politics? to prevent more blood from being spilled.

New York City Mayor Bloomberg, who has been pushing for tougher gun laws, called for Washington to act immediately.

?Not even kindergarteners learning their A, B, Cs are safe,? he said. ?We heard after Columbine that it was too soon to talk about gun laws. We heard it after Virginia Tech. After Tucson and Aurora and Oak Creek. And now we are hearing it again.?

Russia's foreign ministry denies its senior diplomat talked of Syria's Assad impending defeat

MOSCOW - Russia's Foreign Ministry has denied that a top diplomat said Syrian President Bashar Assad is losing control of his country.

It said in a statement on Friday that Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov "has not made any statements or special interviews recently" on Syria but was simply citing the stance of the Syrian opposition while giving a speech on Thursday.

Russian state-owned news agencies had quoted Bogdanov as saying that rebels might win the civil war, a comment that appeared to dramatically shift Russia's stance on Syria. The U.S. later on Thursday commended Russia for "waking up to the reality" by acknowledging the regime's impending fall.

Analysts viewed the diplomat's statement as Russia's attempt to begin positioning itself for Assad's eventual defeat.

NHL luckout | Local Hockey | Sports | The London Free Press

A topic like the NHL lockout isn?t something that would interest the average seven-year-old. All that mattered to a bunch of them Thursday was they were on the ice with a pro hockey star.

Corey Perry of the Anaheim Ducks helped put the Oakridge Aeros minor novice team through their paces at Medway Arena. Several of the parents recorded the practice for posterity.

?It does bring back childhood memories,? the Peterborough native and former Knight, who lives in London during the offseason, said after autographs and pictures. ?You just remember the time you spent on the ice, when you loved to go to the rink every day.?

Of course, by this time of year Perry is usually somewhere playing with the Ducks. The 27-year-old readily agreed the up-and-down nature of the negotiations hasn?t been easy to take.

?It?s been tough. You get your hopes up and then something happens,? he said. ?It?s a roller-coaster, but you?ve got to be prepared at any time to get back to work. This could be settled at any moment.?

He also has a strong belief in what the NHLPA is trying to do, but he?s not certain whether his presence in New York would mean much despite his stature in the game.

?Those guys have been doing it for a long time and they know what they?re doing,? Perry said. ?I haven?t really talked to them except to get the occasional update from Don Fehr. Basically I just hear what?s on the news.?

Although Thursday?s bargaining session with mediators didn?t see much progress, if any, Perry remains optimistic a season will be salvaged. ?Everyone?s hopeful and I still have that hopefulness in me. I?m preparing like there?s going to be a season.?

To that end, he?s maintaining his fitness regime and skating with his old junior club almost on a daily basis.

?It?s been great. You get to know them on a daily basis and you never know, some of them could be my teammates one day,? he said. ?It?s been fun and they keep me young.?

The current Knights have matched Perry?s 2005 squad with 18 straight wins and can set the team mark Friday night against the Owen Sound Attack. Perry is rooting for this Knights team to get No. 19 and then some.

?In this era with the shootouts and no ties, what they?ve been able to do is amazing,? he said.

Perry is a free agent in 2013, but he?s not even thinking about that right now. ?We?ve got to get back playing first. We?ll see what happens when the time comes.?

And even though he?s accomplished almost everything he can in the game ?a Memorial Cup, a Stanley Cup, a Hart Trophy for NHL most valuable player, a 50-goal season, three all-star game appearances, a world junior gold and an Olympic gold ? Perry wouldn?t be discouraged enough by the lockout to quit even if he was five years older.

?There?s still that drive to keep going,? he said. ?You always want to do more and win more championships.?

And regain the trash-talking initiative from London native Drew Doughty of the L.A. Kings, he admitted.

Getting Perry to the practice was a snap, said Oakridge head coach Rob Crowther, who?s known Perry for some time.

?He owed me from golf,? Crowther joked. ?Nah, it wasn?t hard at all. He?s a really good guy. The kids may not have known who he was before, but they certainly do now. The parents knew Sunday he was coming, so the kids have been well-educated all week.

?Ten years down the road it?s going to hit them. They were on the ice with Corey Perry.?

Who says there?s nothing good about the lockout?

GKIDS: The Scrappy Little Guy of Animation | The Wrap Movies

If Disney/Pixar and DreamWorks Animation are the big players in the animation field, the small New York-based GKIDS is the scrappy little guy, picking up foreign-made, mostly hand-drawn films and giving them small releases and film-festival exposure.

But over the last three years, the new kid has had as much Oscar clout as the behemoths, picking up three Best Animated Feature nominations.

That?s two more than Disney, one more than Pixar and the same number as DWA. (Granted, Pixar?s nominees both won, something GKIDS has yet to do.)

GKIDS, which stands for Guerilla Kids International Distribution Syndicate, started in 2008 as an outgrowth of the New York International Children?s Film Festival. It scored its first Oscar nomination in 2010 with the first film it bought outright, "The Secret of Kells."

?We got it three days before the Oscar deadline, so we had to clear a bunch of logistical hurdles and then scratch our heads and say, ?So what is this Oscar campaigning thing about??? GKIDS founder Eric Beckman told TheWrap. ?

Also read: Pixar's Maverick Director: How I'd Tweak Our Formula for Success

Earlier this year the company surprised even itself by landing a pair of noms, one for "Chico & Rita" and one for "A Cat in Paris." This year, operating under the philosophy that they only want to distribute ?Oscar-caliber animation? and that any film that deserves an Oscar-qualifying run is going to get one, GKIDS has four dogs in the race: the French films "Zarafa" (pictured) "The Rabbi?s Cat" and "The Painting" and the Japanese-made "From Up on Poppy Hill."

So far, GKIDS has qualified all of its Oscar films before the movies? theatrical release, using the Academy attention as a key way to boost visibility, interest exhibitors and spice up those DVD packages.

Beckman said he?d like to one day release a film theatrically before qualifying it for the Oscars -- but in the meantime, he?s happy to play the Academy game. ?It?s not rocket science,? he said. ?We think our films are good, and we just need to get Oscar voters into the room to watch them.??

The company?s goal, he added, is simple: ?We want to draw attention to handmade, mostly international animated films, and show that animation is not just for kids and not just for tentpoles.? He paused. ?I just hope we?re not losing our underdog status.? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ??
