NHL, players' union open labour negotiations with meeting

NEW YORK -- The NHL and the players' union opened negotiations on a new labour deal Monday by meeting for about 2 1-2 hours.

Commissioner Gary Bettman and Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly met with NHLPA Executive Director Donald Fehr, union special counsel Steve Fehr and several player reps at the league's Manhattan offices.

"Members of our League Office staff and several of our owners met today with the NHLPA and various members of the players' negotiating committee at the League Office in New York," Daly said in a statement released after the meetings. "The meeting was very cordial and we hope it was constructive.

"Before breaking, the parties discussed follow-up steps and confirmed plans for future meetings. We have nothing further to report at this time."

Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonsis declined to comment as he left the building and hopped into a waiting car.

The NHLPA did not comment.

Among the players in attendance were Scott?Hartnell of the Flyers, Rick?DiPietro of the Islanders and George?Parros of the Anaheim Ducks, Chris?Campoli of the Canadiens, Dan Winnik of the Sharks, Brandon?Dubinsky of the Rangers, Brad?Boyes of the Sabres, Ron?Hainsey of the Jets.

This was the first formal talks between the two sides. They come after the NHLPA's executive board held a three-day meeting in Chicago earlier this week.

The collective bargaining agreement expires Sept. 15. There is fear the league could be heading toward another lockout.

The owners locked out the players in 2004 and it cost the NHL an entire season. The agreement that came out of that deal put in place a salary cap for teams for the first time.

Don Fehr, the former head of the baseball players' union who was hired by the NHLPA after the last labour deal was cut, said Wednesday at a news conference in Chicago that the players would be willing to start the season without a deal if negotiations were ongoing.

INGREDIENTS: 2 cups your choice of Galaxy cheese alternative shreds, 3/4 cup low sodium vegetable broth, 1/2 tsp. garlic powder, 1/2 tsp. cornstarch, 2 tbsp. low sodium vegetable broth
DIRECTIONS: In a medium stock pot over medium heat, add Galaxy shreds, vegetable broth and garlic powder stirring constantly. In a separate small bowl, combine cornstarch and remaining broth. Slowly add to shred sauce and continue to cook for 5 min. at same heat. Add more broth as needed to achieve desired thickness.
TIP #2: Galaxy?s New Vegan Shreds are perfect for any recipe calling for shredded cheese. Simply bake at 425? for 7 to 8 minutes for the perfect melt! Note: We do not recommend microwaving any of our dairy free products.

? GENERAL VERDICT
Mexican: The vegan Mexican shreds felt crumbly and wet on my palms. I enjoyed a blend of white and orange shreds while Daiya Vegan Cheese provides shreds in individual colours. After baking the cheese on the pizza, the cheese looked creamy and gooey. It melted really well, and as it cooled down, it kept its shape without being runny. Galaxy Nutritional Foods Vegan? Shred retains firmness and consistency, and it did not make my dough soggy while some other vegan cheese tend to be runny and clumpy. However, the cheese shreds did not have a Mexican flavour whereas it would be spicy or jalapeno flavoured. They tasted a bit sweet, but once I apply sliced green jalapenos on my Mexican pizza, it gives more flavour and heat to the vegan Mexican cheese shreds. This vegan shreds is perfect for a Mexican pizza, plus a potential mac and cheese or casserole dish that requires creamy look.

Mozzarella: I cannot see the difference in flavours between Mexican and Mozzarella, but only in colours. I personally preferred the Mexican due to the blend of white and orange vegan shreds. The mozzarella vegan shreds look like a perfect addition to vegan Alfredo or creamy-cheesy dishes!. It?s creamier than Daiya Vegan Cheese. However it does have a bit of a sweet tone to it. Katy Perry performed 124 shows during her California Dreams tour, pushing right through the end of her 14-month marriage to Russell Brand without a break to mourn the loss outside the glare of the spotlight.

Following the July 5 release of her concert film, ?Katy Perry: Part of Me,? the superstar is going to take a much needed breather to reenergize and regroup.

?I?m going to go into major hiding,? the 27-year-old singer told Access Hollywood?s Shaun Robinson of her future plans at the ?Katy Perry: Part of Me? premiere in Hollywood on Tuesday. ?I think I?ll have to after this movie comes out!?

Though fame has its drawbacks (for example, having your personal life under constant scrutiny), Katy said she?s incredibly grateful for the support of her fans.

?I?m completely overwhelmed,? she told Shaun. ?Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it! No, I?m very excited, very proud.

BUSM study finds gout and hyperuricemia on the rise in the US

(Boston) Researchers from Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) have found that the incidence of gout and hyperuricemia (high uric acid levels) in the U.S. has risen significantly over the last 20 years and is associated with major medical disorders like hypertension and chronic kidney disease. The study, which is published in the American Journal of Medicine, was led by Hyon Choi, MD, DrPH, professor of medicine in the section of rheumatology and the clinical epidemiology unit at BUSM and rheumatologist at Boston Medical Center (BMC).

Gout is a common inflammatory arthritis triggered by crystallization of uric acid within the joints, causing severe pain and swelling.

Using data from the latest U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted in 2007 and 2008, which included data from 5,707 participants, the researchers found that gout now affects 8.3 million Americans, or four percent of the population. They also found that hyperuricemia affects 43.3 million U.S. adults, or 21 percent of the population.

The study results demonstrated that participants with gout have remarkably high rates of hypertension (74 percent) and chronic kidney disease (71 percent). More than half of this patient population was obese (53 percent) and a significant number had diabetes (26 percent) and kidney stones (24 percent). These participants also showed high rates of heart attack (14 percent), heart failure (11 percent) and stroke (10 percent).

Additionally, study results showed that among individuals with the highest uric acid levels, rates of kidney disease (86 percent), hypertension (66 percent) and obesity (65 percent) were high. Approximately one third of the survey participants had heart failure and diabetes, and the prevalence of heart attack (23 percent) and stroke (12 percent) also were high.

"These findings highlight the remarkable prevalences and population estimates of medical disorders associated with gout and hyperuricemia in the U.S.," said Choi, the study's senior author. "Appropriate preventive and management measures of these associated conditions should be implemented in gout management, and when considering treatment strategies in gout, the lifestyle and pharmacologic measures that can concurrently improve serum uric acid and reduce associated disorders should be preferred."

sexuality empowerment - How Do I Get More Confidence?

I have been teaching sexuality for so long and over the years when I ask people--women in particular--what they think they need in order to feel sexually empowered, without reservation, the number one answer I get the most is "I want more confidence" or "I want more sexual confidence." My conclusion? Most people want more confidence!

Coming from a place of insecurity, which is the opposite of confidence, doesn't feel good and usually does not get you what you want.

It's very hard, if not impossible, to create the relationships of your dreams from a place of insecurity. Without a healthy dose of confidence, you have a really hard time standing up for yourself or asking for what you need in your relationships, and sometimes you get walked all over because of it. Not fun.

It's hard to build a really successful business or career from a place of insecurity. If you are feeling frustrated because your career feels stagnant or you are playing small and not taking steps to do the work you feel you are here to do in the world the way to change it is to have the confidence to do it. It's so painful to watch how people play small and keep themselves from having their dreams.

It's hard to ask for the money you deserve from a place of insecurity. Maybe you want a raise, or you want to raise your prices if you have your own business and you lack the confidence to ask for what you know you are worth.

It's definitely hard to get the sex and the sexual satisfaction you want and deserve from a place of insecurity. You might be feeling sexually frustrated, not having orgasms, not feeling like you get as much from sex as your partners, or feel stuck in not being able to ask for what you need sexually and so you aren't getting it. I find that many people who are powerful in other areas of their lives, (particularly women) just lack the ability to get their needs met in the bedroom and often feel really small and dissatisfied there.

Confidence is often talked about like it's a pill you can take, or like it's something you acquire in one big shot and you are good. But it's not. It's something you have to work at. It's a process to develop confidence.

This is why I began to look at people's confidence and scrutinize how their confidence operates . . . I know from all my years of work that there are patterns around people's ways of expressing and using their confidence and I've learned a few things about what makes people tick, what their needs and fears are, and what will help them get to the next level in their life, love, work and play.

I developed the 5 Confidence Types? out of my work with people. You may have a clear dominant type or you might be a combination of types. Most people do have a dominant type that is your home base right now--your default or the place you are most comfortable, or uncomfortably comfortable. You can learn skills to help you bring more of the energy of some of the other types into your repertoire if you want that, and you can also work on understanding how your type operates so you know what to work on enhancing and what to be careful of.

I want you to find out what your Confidence Type? is! This is not a one-size fits all operation. We don't all operate with the same brand of confidence. We have varying strengths and vulnerabilities and I want to help you define where you are now and how to move your confidence to the place where you want to go. I am so excited about helping people build their confidence. I know how important the element of confidence is in your being able to create the relationships, professional success, and sexual life you want.

Wildfires leave Colorado tourism high and dry

On Monday FEMA authorized the use of federal funds to fight the fires in Colorado that are burning across the state. The most recent fire, in Colorado Springs, resulted in 11,000 evacuations over the weekend. Miguel Almaguer reports.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- ?After two weeks of around-the-clock work, firefighters are starting to gain the upper hand on the High Park fire near Fort Collins, Colo. But even as some of the residents are allowed to return to their homes, there is another casualty from the 100-square-mile blaze: Northern Colorado?s annual influx of summer visitors seeking clean air and whitewater rivers.

Jim Clark, executive director of the Ft. Collins Convention and Visitors Bureau, can see a smoky haze over the Roosevelt National Forest from his location downtown.

?The bad news is...we?re known for our outdoor recreation," he said. "A lot of that at the present time is closed.?

Clark?s office is handling many out-of-state calls from people who have questions about the smoke from the fire.? For the past several?weeks?the Colorado Department of Public Health has issued air quality health alerts because of the dense smoke along a 200-mile corridor from Colorado Springs in the south up to the Wyoming border. This week, the smoke has been less of an issue.

?We have lots of things for them in town -- breweries, shops ... everything is still open," Clark said. "But, there are some folks who would have visited us that probably will stay away.?

Over the weekend, new flames near Colorado Springs forced thousands to evacuate -- one of several fires emptying campgrounds and hotels across the parched state.?

Preston Harrington and Darrel Sellers,?of?Lake Charles, La., had planned to climb nearby Pikes Peak. Then they got evacuated from their hotel.?

"We're used to the hurricanes and evacuating and what not. And we come up here and expect good weather and since we've been here they've had hailstorms, and now forest fires -- it just reminds us of being back home," Harrington said.?

Bill Fee, shopkeeper at the Nature of Things Chainsaw Art in Manitou Springs, Colo., said it's devastating for local businesses, especially the weekend before the Fourth of July when they tend to have the most customers.?

"I do worry for Colorado this year for tourism through the whole entire state -- not just the small town of Manitou, which relies completely on tourism -- it affects [businesses] across the board."

Clark says it will be weeks or even months before any hard numbers are available to calculate the loss of visitors due to the fire.

Rafting companies offer refunds

The losses have already started for Pat Legel, owner of Wanderlust Adventure Rafting in Bellevue, Colo. Legel has spent what should have been a busy start to the rafting season dusting off his rafts and life jackets. ?This is historical. This is the longest we?ve been out of business.?

Legel?s company offers trips down the Cache la Poudre River, one of the most popular whitewater rivers in Colorado. The fire has cut off access to the river where it runs through the burn zone. Wanderlust is one of six local outfitters which have suspended rafting on the Poudre since June 9.

Legel said his heart goes out to the more than 200 residents who have lost their homes to the fire.? But, for his business, the hardest part is making the daily calls to customers to let them know the river canyon is closed and to arrange refunds on their rafting fees.

?It?ll be a survival season, if we can get back some time early July. If not, we?ll have to maybe lay some people off and get a loan to carry us through next year.?

Legel started the company in 1982. He?s now 65.

"I don?t think I will see the landscape along the river recover in my lifetime,? he said.?

Tourists changing plans

Jane Servi had house guests for the weekend at her Larimer County home and had to?scramble to make new plans for weekend activities. ?She was looking forward to showing the visitors from Boston a Colorado whitewater adventure. But her Poudre River rafting trip was one of hundreds cancelled by the fire. Eventually she found an alternative rafting location nearly 70 miles away.?It was disappointing, she said, but she's more concerned "about the people who are up there whose houses have been destroyed, and people who have been displaced."

Last week "NBC Nightly News" found Grant Houx, owner of St. Peter?s Fly shop in Fort Collins, standing thigh-deep in the Poudre River about 10 miles downstream from the fire. He was whipping a seven-foot-long fly rod through air that tastes like smoke. The water runs clear and cool here, for now. But when late summer rains come, the soot, ash and charred underbrush from 70,000 scorched acres will wash down the Poudre and smaller streams like a black tide.? Not good for trout and other native fish.

?'Concern? is one word. We don?t know exactly what the effects of that soot will be,? he said.?

Houx?s fishing guide service has had ?a few? fire-related cancellations. He explains that fishing is still good on several other rivers in the area unaffected by the fire.

Fires of 2012 follow record year for Colorado tourism?

According to the Colorado Tourism Office, 59.7 million visitors came to the state in 2011. They spent $10.7 billion. Larimer County, where the High Park Fire continues to burn, represents 2.7 percent of statewide visitor spending.

Colorado Tourism Office chief Al White says statewide reservations are up ?double-digits over last summer? but acknowledges the impact of the fires in northern Colorado and Fort Collins. The hope is that tourists understand that even a 100 square mile fire represents less than one tenth of one percent of the state of Colorado.

?The High Park fire is a tragedy, but there is still a lot to see and do in Colorado," White said. "And for now, people are still making plans to come here.?

Vitamin D deficiency common among adolescents evaluated for weight-loss surgery

ScienceDaily (June 25, 2012) ? Most adolescents preparing for weight-loss, or bariatric, surgery are deficient in vitamin D, a new study demonstrates.

The results will be presented Tuesday at The Endocrine Society's 94th Annual Meeting in Houston.

"This is particularly important prior to bariatric surgery where weight loss and decreased calcium and vitamin D absorption in some procedures may place these patients at further risk," said study lead author Marisa Censani, M.D., pediatric-endocrinology fellow at Columbia University Medical Center, in New York City. "These results provide insight into prevalence and risk factors for pre-existing vitamin D deficiency in obese adolescents prior to bariatric surgery."

In the United States, weight-loss surgery is becoming an increasingly common procedure due to the obesity epidemic, which affects people of all ages, including children. One of the most common types is gastric-bypass surgery, which involves surgically removing a portion of the stomach, thereby reducing its size and ability to hold large amounts of food. While highly effective at controlling weight, weight-loss surgery presents certain challenges. One of the greatest post-surgical difficulties is maintaining adequate nutrition, particularly with respect to factors associated with bone development since adolescents have not yet reached their peak bone mass.

Vitamin D is found in foods such as eggs, milk, and fish, as well as the sun. The vitamin plays an essential role in regulating the amount of the minerals calcium and phosphorus circulating in the blood.

While previous studies have found an increased risk of vitamin D deficiency among adults evaluated for weight-loss surgery, whether this deficiency also occurred among morbidly obese adolescents remained unclear. Morbid obesity is defined in adults as having a weight-to-height ratio, or BMI, greater than 40; a healthy BMI is no more than 24.9.

In one of the first studies of its kind, Censani and her co-investigators found that more than half of adolescents undergoing evaluation for weight-loss surgery were vitamin D deficient, and 8 percent had severe deficiencies. Slightly less than one-fifth had adequate vitamin D levels. Patients with the highest BMIs were the most likely to be vitamin deficient.

In other findings, investigators identified several racial differences. African Americans were the most likely to be vitamin D deficient, while Caucasians were the least likely to have a deficiency. Specific percentages of vitamin D deficiency among racial subgroups were:

? 82 percent of African Americans

? 59 percent of Hispanics

? 37 percent of Caucasians

"These results support screening all morbidly obese adolescents for vitamin D deficiency, and treating those who are deficient, particularly prior to bariatric procedures that could place these patients at further risk," Censani said.

Investigators analysed the medical records of 236 adolescents who were being considered for bariatric surgery between March 2006 and June 2011. Of these patients, 219 provided medical records that included data on vitamin D levels. Sixty-five percent were female, their average age was 16 years, and average BMI was about 48. Forty-three percent were Caucasian, 35 percent were Hispanic, and 15 percent were African American.

When I wrote about the lyrical paintings of Charles Courtney Curran back in 2007 I mentioned being disappointed at the small amount of his work available on the web.

Since then the web has continued to expand, bless it?s silicon heart, and more resources for Curran?s idyllic scenes of women in gardens, hanging clothes and surrounded by flowers, as well as his scenes of children playing and domestic activity, have be come available.

Notably, Matthew D. Innis has an extensive and eclectic post on his blog Underpaintings that gives a nice overview of Curran?s work, though the images are not large. For that, look to the Metropolitan Museum of Art?s superb high resolution reproduction of Curran?s portrait of Betty Newell (above, top with detail), as well as some of the zoomable images among Christies past auction lots.
